G'day Guys, The tranny whines like a bitch from about 50kmph upwards, on power and lift off. Asked a shop and they said the transfer case needed servicing..

Is this quite a costly thing, they mentioned most cost is in labour for having to take off the tailshaft etc..

Any idea on what I should be up for the get this renewed?

Its a 1ltr engine and tranny

Bearing kit would be around the $250 to $300 from CBC.

Another option may be trying to find a decent 2nd hand transfer. Can't help you on shop price for a case rebuild though, sorry.

A whining transfer doesn't neccesarily mean it needs bearings. More likely it needs shimming to gain proper clearance on gearset.
A shop should be able to sort it for $250-$300 *IF* they know what they are doing.

fill it with oil stabiliser. i did it to my gear box and it was like syncros in a bottle.

Hmm interesting. Will have to ask the question. Suzistore quoted me about bout 350 to service the tranny but bout 5 to 6 hours labour at about 80 something an hour.. Ive got the quote somewhere was looking at about 800ish for the job. . Cheers for the other feedback too ill check it out. .

Also thought Id add that the box is tight as FUCK after light 4wding, its almost impossible to get her back into 2wd, leaver was like it was stuck in concrete!

Recently changed the bushing as well, but yeh I didnt dare take it off road since, due to being worried about not getting it back into 2wd again.

If that happens again try to reverse a few meters and try again.

Heres the locktup transfer rebuild kit. It's pretty cheap and I think they are over your way. Transfers aren't the hardest of things to rebuild but can be a little daunting I guess. I just bought a cheap press from trade tools to do mine.

I suppose the biggest worry is you might go through and rebuild it and still find it doesn't fix the whine. Just get some big mud tyres to drown it out.

The locktup kit does not have the roller bearings.

got to get me some of that. box doesnt like going into 2nd and 3rd most of the time.
