I usually get a pair of vice grips and wiggle it out, but that usually puts scores in the cap so I don't know if you could reuse it, if that does work I usually start tapping the other way and push the other cap out, by the time you have done that some of the needles have fallen over in the cap you did before and that will let you hit it out a bit further.

That is only good if your going to replace them.

Well i guess i wont be able to pinpoint it this trip home, i will need to drive the car a little still before i leave for work (albeit, 20m to the shed) so i dont want to make it undriveable again just yet.

Oh well, fresh UJ's are on order, guess theyll have to wait till im home next.

PS. I couldnt detect any slop in the UJ while they were out, Can they be broken without visible slop?

Yeah, easy. I bought a drive shaft the other week and it had no play in the unis but the caps were rusted on and dry to the bone but then it was really hard to move.

yeah, well the gbox side seems a little hard to move, and slightly "ratchety" if you get my drift. the rear side is pretty smooth though. Pretty sure i didnt feel that sort of resistance when i first fitted this shaft, so i may be onto a winner.

Put shaft back together to fit and that feeling has gone now?>! weird.


Well im done with it for now, raining far too hard to get under car on cold wet concrete. Will have to deal with it in 2 weeks with fresh UJ's

99.99% sure that its the Jackshaft UJ's now, Like i said in my prev post, me playing with the UJ in the press must have dislodged and moved the needle bearings inside them or something, cos when i refitted the shaft and went down the shops. THE NOISE WAS GONE!

still had the shifter boot off for maximum effect, all i could hear was lovely fresh bearing noise from the t-case.

The rattle sloooooowly returned, indicating to me the UJ's started to wear back into their original state.

So stoaked. Ill update you all when i get back in a few weeks, may even do a quick how-to on UJ's, not that it's hard.

Put the tcase in neutral and crank it up in 5th on your driveway or something. You may be able to hear/feel/see the vibes from the jack shaft easier minus the road noise etc

Im kinda surprised that UJ's can be rooted with no play in them. i thought that if they had no play, they were serv.... end of story... i guess not!

anyway, nothings 100% yet till i actually change them out. stay tuned....

well now i know a bit about UJ's i didnt a week ago! lol. Also learnt a HELL of a lot about T-Cases. so its not a complete loss! im not really sore about rebuilding the case, as it was a bit gungy inside and now i know its nice and new.

Thought id put a bit of an update on this.

changed UJ's the other week in the jack shaft.. greased em up nice and good, but guess what? the noise is still there.

my mechanic neighbor rekons its just gear chatter in the gearbox and is normal and i shouldnt worry about it. Ive since put the shifter boot back in place and i cant hear shit now when im driving, so im thinking maybe the noise is really there all the time and i just sorta stumbled across it. I guess the "pre-load" the stock chain drive case puts on the drive train is enough to eliminate the chatter, and as it didnt have a neutral i couldnt detect it before.

if i put the new tcase in neutral and stick it in gear its pretty noticeable. put as far as my mech mate rekons, thats cos theres no load on the train at all and there would be maximum chattering at that point.

if someone could take their converted case jimny for a spin with the boot off id feel a lot happier about it. but as it stands im just leaving it as-is, as it doesnt affect drive ability in any way and i have no reason to think that somethings exploded in the box.

Digging up an old one here. Update is the noise has gone. Guess it just needs to wear in over time. Very happy now
