I've had initial discussions regarding a LR tank for the GV's with a mob here in Perth. OD won't be going in for another week or so to be looked at for a tank so thought I'd put it out there to get ideas and such. You don't need to put your hand up for one/commit to buying one or anything like that, just thoughts and ideas.
In the discussions we talked about size of tank and if it was worth while. We come up with some rough figures and it'd be great to hear what you think.
For a replacement tank, it would need to get to the 90-100 litre mark minimum to be worth it. Thoughts.
For an aux tank (most likely spot will be roughly in line with the muffler but on the other side of the prop shaft) it would need to be around the 50 litre or larger to be worth it. Thoughts.
No prices that I can give yet (we had some rough wild guesses tho)
Be great if you all could reply with your thoughts and ideas even if you think it's a dumb idea to get a LR tank for a GV as I'm interested in hearing it all. Be great if you could keep it constructive tho so that when I take OD in to be put up on the hoist for a look at, I've got some ideas to throw around with them.
It may turn out a lost cause due to limited space under the GV but I reckon it's worth a look at cause you never know.

I'd be keen depending on size/price, although personally I'd probably want it to take up the extra room I've got from the body lift to make the most of the space.
Not overly fussed if it auxillary or replacement, I'd prefer whichever one would give the biggest capacity boost. Would need to be a fairly substantial increase, at least 40 litres and preferably 60+.

What models are you looking at making these for?

The original GV.
B4T, I understand you've spoken with long ranger over your way about a LR tank. These guys here asked me about the 5 door model while I was getting a bar made as they have had a number of queries and where looking for a car to check out, so thought I'd hit at it from this side of the big beach.

It's theoretically possible to do what I will describe as a "saddle bag" tank - one that fits below the rear seat and hangs over the drive shaft, in a manner similar to that on the 06 & later GV - getting the fuel out may present a challenge, I'm not certain how it's done on the GV but I have a Pajero iO which has a tank like that, in that location, and on the iO there are two fuel gauge senders wired in series, and a single pump in what Mitsubishi calls the main tank (right side) with a second pickup in the sub tank (left side) - there's one filler (right side) and the main tank fills first and once you get to half full, it overflows into the sub tank.
So that it's clear - the iO does not have two separate tanks - it's one tank, with a hump in the bottom to clear the drive shaft - if the tank is more than half full, fuel flows freely from side to side, but once it drops below half, you have two sections.

Be interesting to see what you come up with, coz there definetly isn't much room under there. Don't think i'd bother unless it was almost double what it is now.

There isn't much room under where? From memory there should be close to 1 cubic foot under each seat on a 5 door (and that's allowing space for the drive shaft), 2 cubic feet should run in the vicinity of 60 litres - the stock is 66 if I remember correctly. so it would be pretty much double.

Passenger side has the exhaust in the way, mine has got a huge stock muffler along that area.

60L increase is what I would be after, currently using three Jerry cans to get 1000 km range.

Look all I'm doing is making a suggestion, based on something I've seen - it's not an insurmountable problem - the iO exhaust runs in pretty much the same position, the sub tank is smaller than the main tank to accomodate it, my Suzuki Swift also has the tank under the rear seat with the exhaust going around and past it, but on the right this time, big difference is the Swift, being FWD doesn't need a hump to clear the drive shaft. It wasn't such a wet day I'd put both the iO and the GV up on ramps and get pictures of what's underneath there, if the weather on the week end is better I'll do it.

B4T, I understand you've spoken with long ranger over your way about a LR tank. . Yes i spoke with them and they said a tank was possible. They estimated about 40l even without looking under the car. I was invited to put my car on the hoist so they could design a tank to fit but i would be charged for hoist time, and everything else. Original tank was estimated to cost me over $2k to get made but that was a guess as it would depend on how long it took to make one. but once they had the design it would be cheaper for the next person....... That was alot of money for just 2 jerry cans extra of fuel. so i havent done anymore about it. Plus they didnt seem that interested in doing it either. didnt think it would sell. as very few Vitara and sierra tanks were sold in the past.

You're quite right Chop, passenger side has the exhaust in the way, and a huge stock muffler - but if you look closer, you'll see that the muffler is under the floor, and not actually in the under seat space I'm suggesting can be used - you can also, theoretically, move the muffler forward some and maybe clear the under seat area, or use a smaller muffler, or have the left side of the saddle bag tank shallower than the right side and put a heat shield over the exhaust. Anyway - a little re-routing of the exhaust might be necessary, as I said it's not an insurmountable problem. Still a bit on the wet side, pictures hopefully by weekend.

It's raining again today, so no pictures from my "fleet", but I came across this in another forum and thought it might be of interest. This is the underside of the second generation GV (2006 onward) - it's independent rear so there's no rear axle as on the first gen GV or my iO - but you can see how the tank straddles the drive shaft and in this case the exhaust.

Straddling the rear drive shaft on a IRS vehicle would be a straight forward solution I reckon due to the rear drive shaft not moving up and down more than about an inch or so at the most. In the case of the original GV it may not be suitable due to the rear shaft moving a hell of a lot more as the rear suspension cycles up and down. At full compression the drive shaft may be very close to the body floor, who knows. Certainly an idea I'll keep in mind when I discuss further but I don't think it will be a viable solution in this case. I could be proven wrong tho

Agreed - but, that's exactly where the tank on my Pajero iO is - under the rear seat, straddling the drive shaft - and the iO, like the GV has a coil sprung, four link with panhard rod, live rear axle. As soon as I get a dry enough day, you'll get the pictures.

Sorry about the delay - but here it is. This is the fuel tank on a Pajero iO, as I mentioned it fits in the space under the rear seat, straddles the drive shaft, which connects to a live axle, with a five link rear suspension, very similar to that on the GV - notice it's cut away on the left side (right side of the picture, since this is taken from the front looking backwards. Attachment: PAJERO_TANK.jpg Here's a "side" shot - you can see the axle a bit better, and also the lower right link. Attachment: PAJERO_TANK_2.jpg

This is taking a bit longer than anticipated. I've spoken with them a couple of times and they are very busy with other work so can't get my car in at the moment for a good looksee (prob not a bad thang as the cruiser is off the road in lots of little bits). I'll keep onto them tho.
Thanks for the ideas and pics fordum, seeing it makes a hole bunch more sense now. The huge GV muffler may have to move or go for a nicer sport muffler if using an idea like that tho.

You're welcome - and it should be possible to move the GV muffler forward - on my GV (which I think has the stock muffler), it's half under the floor and half under the seat, and at a glance there's enough space ahead of it to cut the pipe & reweld so that it completly clears the under seat area.
