Hey guys, just in the process of pulling apart my transfer case at the moment (haven't ordered my gears yet, so maybe getting ahead of myself =P)
I've got everything apart and haven't lost anything yet But I did find this floating in there and really not sure what it is, can't seem to find it in any of the articles and I don't remember seeing it in the workshop manual either. Does anyone know what it is?

I have had a heap of cases apart now and not seen anything plastic inside them at all.

It sits up in a groove near the shifter rods.

I'll get a pic of one in place this arvo.

I found one in my case... hahah, idk what it does but it's still in my case and my case still works. and I have leaves and debris on top of my car from high speed flood action.
Just put it back in

Thing is it must have fallen out or dislodged when I opened it, found it just floating around..... so I don't really know where to put it back, going to have to have a closer look and try and find that groove, but a pic would be awesome

I do wonder what it does though, looks out of place in an all metal case, especially being such a little flimsy piece of plastic :S

PS. Can I just ask a quick dumb question in this thread while a few people are looking at it (rather than start a new one)
I'm just ordering all my new parts at the moment, and was about to press buy over at low-range off road, but just really wanted a second opinion here first. I'm running 30" tyres and looking at getting gears. I was going for 4.9:1 gears, but would like to know what people think is the better option between 4.9's and 6.5's. They are a similar price and the 6.5's offer a much lower low range gearing.
But what would that translate to in actual driving? Would I be revving too hard in high range at 100?

I know it is a stupid question that gets asked a lot, so sorry in advance

For 30's..... the 4.9's are perfect. 6.5's will make it scream on the highway.

Personally I think that 6.5's are borderline to slow for 31's....

If you have plans for 31-33" tyres in the not too distant future, then the 6.5's would be a better choice.

Nah, pretty happy with the 30's to be honest, so I will go with the 4.9's I guess. Just had read a few different conflicting opinions, and thought it might be worth asking as there isn't much of a price difference between them.

Get the 4.9's
I had them in my tintop with 30' Bighorns and at 100km/h the revs were at 3,450RPM

I put the transfer (4.9s) in the ute now with the sierra 5spd box...4.1 diffs....31's simutomo's the revs sit at 3,650RPM

IMO 235/75r15s and 6.5s with a 3.7r&p are fine for Vic conditions, terrible in deep sand though.

I had 5:12 with 31's and was very both onroad and off, so 4.9 & 30's will work well

I've rebuilt MANY sierra transfers, and I've only ever seen one.

I'd be putting it back in if your transfer gets noisy you will know why that is there to guide the oil onto the bearing so the bearing dosent dry out and heat up if it's not there you could run the risk of over heating the bearing cousing it to fail premature.
I wouldn't risk it.

I went for 4.9s with 30" M/Ts in my 95 WT HT. Great on highway cruising, zippy around town & heaps offroad. Generally only use 1st low down hills. Also no plastic in my T/Case. 6.5s would be too low on 30".
