Hey guys,
I need some opinions from the more experienced vitara enthusiasts.
I'm looking at buying a 1991 vitara Lwb jlx, stock as a rock!
The seller is asking 2000 but I'm going to try and get a few hundred off that.
My dilemma... It is very straight and has power everything, doesn't look to be a lot of work in it and it has roughly 4 months rego left... BUT!! it has 338 thousand km... It's just the 1.6 fuel injected...
My question is, what should I be paying for this car and if I do need to do work to the motor down the track is it expensive or complex? I have no experience with this particular motor but have done heads etc on other cars and 4wds...
Also is there any other common problems I should be checking for?

Sounds good!
Not only has the engine done 338k, but gbox,transfer, diffs, bearings, tailshaft etc has too. (unlikely the front diff has though)
efi is a good thing.
Id still be tempted. if engine dies, 1-1.5k for another to put in supply only. diffs 200-500 supply only. Bearing etc. Might need some tlc when you get it. so just keep prices in your mind if something happens
zooks are quite simple once you've done it once.

Just check the engine for the obvious such as water in the oil, overheating, oil leaks, knocking noises, blowing excessive smoke etc. take it for a drive you will soon know if it's had a hard life and flogged out. Kms on a car are not a good indicator on how it's been treated, if done low kms and not serviced and driven really hard could be in worse shape than opposite in high kms car. I think around 30,000km per year is average for most cars as well.

How do you know that it hasn't been rebuilt already? When I buy cars I would prefer to buy a high km country car over a low km city car because the high km car has a higher chance of being serviced at the correct times and hasn't spent half it's life idleing in traffic.
Country driving is very easy on cars, I have had brake pads last for 200000km on family 4wd wagons

Well I drove it, only problem I found was that the front left shock was a bit morn and there was some oils leaking from the tapper cover... I also think the thermostat may need replacing or is it normal for the temp guage to move only very slightly if at all? I bought it anyway for 1800 as I figured I can fix these problems easily,
Got it home and started to go through the 40 odd receipts I have got with the car...
Found out in the 4th owner, the car has been serviced regularly, never failed an rta inspection since 04 which I guess hints that the previous owner looked after it...
Also discovered its had a motor swap, and then the head was serviced and skimmed also, motor has about 40,000 on it since the head was done...
All in all I'm pretty happy with it, I'll slowly tidy it up and start modifying ASAP!
