Why does everyone say that a commodore motor is a boat anchor ?
Ive had 2 V6s and think that they are great, sold one at near 400,000 kilometres years ago to a mate, its well over 600 now, and still pulls about 230k and at 140k it gets 10 liters per 100kilometers.
Its got me fucked, that seems pretty reasonable to me.

Because they weigh enough to keep an oil tanker from floating away?

Dunno bout the 3.6, I have only had the 3.8s.
They cast iron Pete, same as heaps of ozzy and american iron, doesn't mean there are pieces of shit.
If that were the story, then the 351, 302, 350, 308, 253, all the red blocks etc are pieces of shit.
The red blocks as near as damit founded this country.
Oh well.

You're putting words in my mouth champ. Boat anchors aren't shit. They are heavy. I refered to the crummy motor as an anchor. We on the same page now?

3L and 5L weigh in at more than 100-120kgs I'd reckon, specially in ready to run specs with everything attached
My guess would be closer to the 180-200kg mark.
Maybe give a toyota wrecker a call and see if they have one they can weigh for you

L Series engines weigh WAY over 100kg.
I'd suggest up to twice the weight of a G16B - 180KG would be a fair guess.
If you are considering this as a conversion into a sierra, I'd strongly advise against it. L engines are a pretty poor diesel, even taking into account that putting a diesel in a suzuki is a silly idea.
Steve.
IMHO the reason the commodore motors are considered boat anchors is more to do with very low HP/L than their outright weight. Cummins Diesels are really heavy, but nobody calls them a boat anchor because they're a decent motor when used in the right application. The 3.8V6 is a cheap and crappy motor designed for cheap and crappy buicks, pontiacs and oldsmobiles in the mid 80's. It's an example of everything that was (is?) wrong with the US car industry - were up The fact that this motor (and the falcon six) continued to be used for as long as they were/are is due to the lack of other suitable RWD platforms world wide and the tiny production volumes associated with the Australian market.
The alloy tech motor isn't a bad thing at all, because it was engineered as a modern "world market" motor, with provision for multivalve heads, direct injection etc.
The 3.8's combustion chamber design is so poor they require a huge plug gap to keep them running at idle (this is from Bosch, not an internet rumour)

A friend of mine had a late 80s Hilux with an L motor (that's an L, not a 3L, 5L ect, the original L). It was by far the most under powered vehicle I've ever been in. He was down to second (5 speed) on hills that the LJ could hold top gear.
Driving on sand tracks, at any sort of incline it didn't actually have enough power to pull its self up it or even spin the wheels in our super soft, dry sand. You had to do a bit of clutch mashing to get it up anything, as in drive until it nearly stalled, clutch in, rev it up, dump the clutch repeat.
L motors are boat anchors.
If I was to do a diesel conversion on a Suzuki, I'd use an XUD motor but I wouldn't do a diesel conversion on a Sierra, I'd buy a Daihatsu Scat or Rocky.

So Hilux desali, Must run Hilux gbox. Then may as well run hilux diffs, Run hilux shafts, Then may as well fit hilux body.
Or
Buy a Hilux suited to the weight, and its all standard!

^^ Gearing would need a lot of consideration for a diesel engine

 not another diesel in a zook thread... guarantee this goes nowhere apart from the scrap metal place, when you realised you've ruined a perfectly good suzuki.

I'm totally not a Suzuki purist, and build whatever you like, but I don't think the effectiveness of the end result is going to justify the work.
I'm going to assume that just being different isn't your sole consideration, my guess is that you're looking for something that's better than a hilux, patrol or Suzuki at something.
To me, it sounds like a slow, heavy, bulky Suzuki, or a cramped, slow patrol, or an impractical hilux. Regardless, it's going to be expensive.
What's your desired outcome? good projects rarely start with poor motors.

Yeah i mean diasel just like zukmeista's a moreon I do realise your running a 1.6 to lux box, But your doing that for lower, stronger gearing than a zook transfer Just like im going to run lux diffs, I might eventually go zook v6 boat anchor with lux gbox and tcase. More popcorn will come out for that one

can you tell me why isnt such a bad idea?
i have spent big dollars on moding other cars before and am pretty dead set ondoing this.
and it will be built for rock cralwing
38+s , 5l/3l turbo , partol diffs , all custom drop arms and coli's . all this in a lwb soft top
one thing i dont under stand is why you allare baging out the 5l's? i have 1kz in my hilux (very close to the same thing) and its great i dont see many zooks with torue like this and abiltiy to do 100 up any hill im happy to hear your opion But i fail to see how it could be a bad thing

As a crawler..... Its been done before.
But you will miss the throttle response of a petrol motor in your zook.
IMO diesels make great work motors, great mileage motors; and with CRDi, great economy. None of these are qualities that are usefull in a rock crawler.

Also... Look into a rangie V8. You can run either auto or manual, the LT230 transfer is sensational, and there are plenty of low and high range gearing options. And they are much lighter, which will allow for a more balanced vehicle. And the best part............. They sound WAY cooler than a dirty oiler
