I went ahead and got the 1987 sierra gearbox rebuilt for now. All new bearings, rollers, seals and syncros.

Eveything is fine now apart from what sounds like a propellor noise that occurs only in 1st gear.

Any ideas what causes that?

Did you get someone to do it for you? Perhaps take it back and ask them
