OK I've put my gti motor in my new ute and I'm having some problems.
Since the transplant I've changed: Water pump (sierra pump) Timing belt (the crank pulley was one tooth out which I changed) Fuel pump (Volvo pump to jackaroo in tank pump).
What its doing: Usually it starts, give it Any throttle and it bogs down (misfires sometimes) It will idle for about 15sec before it stalls usually. Sounds like its back firing Sometimes. Through the air filter and through the exhaust.
What I've tried Moving the crank pulley back to its original timing position. Tried three different AFM. Tried original fuel pump. Checked earths. Plugs were very black Return line doesn't seem to be pushing much fuel through.(fuel only comes out dethrottling)line isn't blocked at all New fuel filter Getting no error codes. My uncle used the comp to earth the wiper motor ( could that have stuffed my comp?) Disconnected the TPS no change was noticed. I haven't touched the dizzy at all since it was running in the previous car
So basically im out of ideas. Hopefully someone here can help me.
Matt

This sounds like a significant issue! Have you connected the correct vacuum reference to the fuel pressure reg?

No I mean the fuel pressure regulator on the end of the fuel rail. It needs to have a manifold vacuum reference line to it or the fuel pressures will be wayyy out.

^^^^^^ I'd start with tps. what codes are the computer spitting out? if you don't have a check engine light please hook one up.

recheck you timing !! getting backfiring into the intake is a good indication your timing is out, did your remove your cam gears from the camshafts ? if so did you put the intake cam gear on the dowel on the "I" slot and line up the "I" timing mark with the indicator on the rocker cover ? and the same for the exhaust cam except use the "E" marks.
did you pinout the ecu to lock the timing (if MK2 or MK3) before setting the ignition timing ?

did you pinout the ecu to lock the timing (if MK2 or MK3) before setting the ignition timing ? i didnt remove the cam gears. when i did the timing i lined the I with the index on the intake side and E with the index on the exhaust side. I have rechecked to make sure all the marks still line up on rocker cover and block, (which they still do). I also locked the timing when i set the IGN timing. I have tried moving the timing around to see if its any different and it runs like shit no matter what IGN timing its set at.

How do you guys jump to all these other potential possibilities when it is stated that the fuel return only has fuel coming out on dethrottling (decelerating).
That return line should have a descent amount coming out of it especially at idle and low loads. It should even have something returning at WOT full load.
See if you can get your hands on a fuel pressure gauge and check that the rail is operating at the correct pressure.

Jonno: yes i have another one here. JrZook: ill pick one up tomorrow. Gotta do some googling to see what what pressure the rail should be at!

I'd say this is a combo of a few things.

My symptoms were identical to yours. Make sure you have the leads connected correctly When i put my MK1 in i had a running MK3 and just looked at the leads and connected them the same way not thinking too much I know that the MK1 spins counter clockwise and MK3 spins clockwise (or the other way around)

They both have a rotor....one spins left....other spins right (can't remember which MK spins which way at the top of my head)

Update. Tried new tps, no change. And fuel pressure testers are a little expensive so Ive sourced a 2nd hand fuel rail and reg really cheap. I'll see how that goes over the weekend.

No joke have this exact same issue exact!!! Just put the motor in, was out of a running swift I pulled it out and I put it in. I wired it and it did run a few times but I shut it down because it wasn't really ready to be running yet, water lines and my gearbox clutch proble (that's solved now). this afternoon was the first time I've run it for any length of time. It ran for about 30sec but bogged down with any throttle applied then would rev up when throttle was let off and would also give little pop's out the air intake like a back fire.
I haven't touched the dizzy or leads durring the conversion. Also have no fuel comming out of my return line. I really believe its a fuel issue there is massive pressure in the line I haven't measured it but I disconnected the feed line and fuel it my shed roof.
I'm using a lift pump, to surge tank then an 040 fuel pump. What are you using ?

I've got a jackaroo fuel tank it runs a in tank pump. I'll post what what happens on Monday when I put the new fuel rail and reg in.

Interesting! Are you sure you guys have the fuel lines plumbed up correctly?
It should go HP pump -> fuel rail -> regulator -> return, not the pump straight into the reg.
Like I said previously you should have a steady stream coming from the return line. It wont be rushing out, just a constant flow and this should happen with the fuel pump on even without the engine running.
Get this happening first then look for further issues if it hasn't sorted it out.

I'm 99% certain mine is set up correctly, fuel from tank goes straight into rail, return line comes out of what looks like the regulator on the otherside which snakes around back to the same spot as the line in. The fuel reg is part of the rail so we cant go wrong there. In theory anywany.

yeah that's right. have you taken your supply line off and checked your getting good flow to the rail?

Yeah. Plenty of fuel getting to the rail. Shoots out everywhere when I take it off.

Yeah to get it to rev you have to stab the throttle. Once its gets up I can get it to 8k
