Called a reputable 4x4 shop close by me today and asked about a hilux conversion both diffs in the jimny, they called back and said cannot get it engineered due to new laws etc blah, blah bull@hit blah! Now I think they are either to busy, not competent or just don't want the hassle? Called another local driveline specialist 10 mins later and got the no hassle can be done and and fairly cheap to from an estimated $2500-$3k for drive in drive out service with my choice of ratios and disc brake rear end as well!!! Reason I am looking into this conversion is TYRES, just whacked my 31,s on and crap! Gutless overheated etc, waiting on gearing to be fitted and installed from trial jimny 24% reduction which I have been told Won't cut the mustard, will break front diff etc... Looked into chromos etc and honestly for the price of front axles, cv,s, resplining side gears, diff housing strengthening, etc etc it's will cost as much for front diff as the whole conversion and then I will be able to better pick gear ratios etc. I am thinking seriously now of pulling the Jimny off the road, getting some serious suspension under it and some 35" tyres.... Maybe enter a few low key comps for fun, no interest in goin anywhere near competitive JUST for fun and I reckon a jimny would be pretty rare in the comp scene so far. If it does go this direction I definitely will be looking for advice, help from anyone with any sort of knowledge in this type of build as to which direction to go etc... Before I get flamed to bad I would like to add I am not interested in building a hydro steer/rear steer etc tough truck beast, just a capable offroader for some fun and possibly a fun event or two.

that's a pretty big build on its own, and $3k sounds far too cheap for the amount of work it would infact be - and still doubtfull you'd get it engineered with 35" tyres... plus your tcase and gearbox are still going to cop a thrashing, and the engine is going to hate trying to turn those bigger tyres.

35" tyres on a jimny wheel base will be laughable

atari4x4 wrote: 35" tyres on a jimny wheel base will be laughable Why? Guys run 35's on sierra shorties all the time. Jimnys are 200mm longer. The problem I see is the tiny wheel arches. Either a shit tonn of lift will be needed, or some very heavy handed 'clearancing' to get 35's on a Jimny.

How do u go about doing a virtual lift on a Jimmy will look tidy ish like Sierras. And with reduction geering shurly the Jimmy engine will cop it?

As for fitting 35,s under it I think it will be possible with modification to wheel arches, body lift and possibly custom springs/shock combo. The Jimny engine will be just fine turning 35" tyres even 40" tyres with enough gearing, the thing that concerns me is strength of gearbox/transfer case? If it all proves to be to hard for engineering and I am betting it is, I will just flick the rego and build it bigger!

If the diff ratios match the tyre diameter, the gearbox and transfer shouldn't see any difference in torque. Brakes on the other hand...

Going from stock wheels and tyres that weigh 10kg less each than 31's etc 15kg more for 35's over stock. The lux diffs will prob be the strongest part, so something else has to give. You will also be driving harder stuff as well because it will be more capable. Unless your soft in the 1st place and just want lux diffs for bling look at me Brakes will be fine for 35's. Certain hilux's run 31's stock and can still be engineered for 35s with some people. Just have to make sure the valving is good in the master/booster to suit the diffs

wht about a sierra transfer swap?
not only would be stronger but ull have different gear ratios for hi/low or extra low

If the diffs gears are selected correctly, the transfer will not experience any more torque than standard. The extra mass however requires more energy to accelerate, and require more braking effort to stop (converting the kinetic energy into heat). The bigger tyres will act like a huge flywheel, storing heaps of power. This will be noticed by poor acceleration, and brakes not working as well. The hilux brakes will be more suitable for the larger tyres, however some tweaking maybe needed. The engine will have to work much harder when accelerating (either from standstill, or going up hill etc), and the brakes work harder.

If you dont change the engine, you arent puting any more torque into your gearbox and transfer. The only thing that will change is slower accelleration (and decelleration) for the same amount of torque (or braking force)
