ok so after the great debate on welded front diffs I have been thinking about a work around that is both cheep and effective. today I was looking at my Spair jimny parts and I remembered I have a complete jimny front diff.. hub 2 hub. so, I have the idea of running spindles, and hubs off the jimny with a 4 vacuum solenoids on a set of 3 pin switches to alow selectable hubs. jimny hubs are also selectable on the fly according to the book... obviously it may not be quite as easy as it sounds but I "should" be able to set this up for around $40 rather than the 1k of a air locker with pretty similar results...
opinions?

We had a jimny with a welded front in the club. It was a complete PITA for all the normal reasons, plus, front CV's just fell apart.
Welded front is dumb enough on muddy tracks... welded front on tiny CV's is REALLY retarded.

sorry i might add some bits (posted from my phone) the bits will be going on to a N/T sierra (it will get cromo's as soon as funds allow) no way would have welded diffs on my jimny!
2 switches, one for each wheel.. to my understanding jimnys are vacuum on, vacuum off..
this would also give me the full advantage of selectable drive. as in i could select what wheel to drive and not.. if this is useful or not i'm not all that sure!
i would say the reason no one has done it (that i can find) is its pretty rare for any one to have this thought and happen to have spare jimny bits laying around!

I think it's going to be a lot harder than it looks. The Jimny hubs aren't really compatible with sierra hubs. check things out, but I think it's going to be a huge hassle to get it to all work.
Add to that the notoriously unreliable Jimny vacuum hubs, and I think the whole idea is a bit probematic. There's a reason iimny owners ditch the vacuum hubs as soon as they can - they unload/fail to engage regulrly.
Get an auto locker for $220 and call it good.
Steve.

not a fan of auto lockers... there as gay as Fucking aids. I spoke with everyone I could find that had manual hubs on there jimnys. the reasons I got told was because they had read that they were un-reliable or wanted to use 2wd low range (like me).
time to pull stuff apart and have a looksee...

Had similar thoughts myself, using the diff actuated free wheel assembly from the Steel GV front diff. Which wouldn't allow independant switching. Never got past a thought, but in theory sounds feasible.
I reckon switchable hub locks on a auto locked centre be a good compromise

I don't see it being a huge amount of work. a simple set up. if the parts go together it will work!..
jimny hubs work "on the fly" so anything below 60kph with no wheel spin they will click in/out. A simple off the throttle, click switch, wait half a sec and get back on gas.. similar to a air locker.
"if" this all go's together well and works it should be a easy and dirt cheep selectable front locker option.

Id never heard on the fly exspresion, I would be keen if u got it all working going strong for a period of time to do it myself as well, I'm not taking the piss out of ur idea, its a ripper as long as it works out to be reliable.
And for me time seems so short @ the moment its utter bs

It's not really selectable (like an air locker) and will probably do more CV damage then good. If you have one CV blown while your out it makes the other one work twice as hard and this is due to the wheel with the hub selected getting all the drive. Where as an Air leaker sends power to the wheel with least resistance when unlocked. So pretty much for this to work you would need to drive around in 4wd hubs unlocked, then when the wheeling time comes whack the switches on for more traction. Driving with only one hub locked it will make the car lurch across the road on acceleration and braking. I think this will cause more problems then it's worth... But if you have the time prove us wrong I like the idea it's clever, cheap mods are awesome!

Could you added a twin stick conversion to the transfer to cruise around in 2L, then switch to 4L for the fun parts? Or are you chasing the ability to pick which wheel is locked?

The steering is still heavy in 2WD with the hubs locked.

if you can't afford a selectable locker, you can't afford chromos but with 215s on you can weld the front and not have much hassel with the CVs i rekon.
