I carry all the tools and recovery gear that I need for a trail repair including heaps of tape, zip ties, sprays, fuses, oils and water etc but I was wondering what people would list as the 5 most important spare parts to carry. I'm talking about repairs that could be done in under an hour depending on mechanical ability. The only spare parts that I have in my inventory at the moment are CV's and wheel bearings but I want to expand that list. What do people carry?

I'd add duct tape. It will be a fan belt, it will hold your busted engine mount down, it will strap your mates hand up when he busts his shoulder, it's a tourniquet, it's a very temporary radiator hose fix, it's a hand throttle... The list goes on.

We used duct tape to make a new belt that ran the alternator and waterpump on a 253 V8 after it snapped in half.

needit is great stuff. fixes holes in fuel tanks brilliantly.

i dont bother with cables because ya dont need a clutch to drive a car and any random length of wire will work the throttle.

I learned to drive with no clutch pedal quick after my slave cyl in my old paj spat the fluid. not as hard as you originally think.

Have taken rear axles, and birfs on hard trips.

I always carry a big torch with or without batteries.

Did you guys know that if you take the reflector out of a torch, point it at the sun and put a stick where the bulb goes you can start a fire with it?

The same can be done with a head light, even a sealed beam. Break the back off the sealed beam, and insert a stick where the filament sits.

The tech term is parabolic reflector, kinda like a wanna be magnifying glass. That's where ciggy's come in hand for starting fires.

It gets below freezing here after mid October, a lot of people don't survive without fire.

That's actually a great thing to know. Maybe not so much for 4x4, but certainly for long term camping or hiking. Only problem is I use an LED torch, which from memory doesn't have a reflector.

I am not an experienced person, nor do I do anything serious, but I would say;

I t really is here. A lot of people don't carry lighters because they don't smoke, and they are never more than 50 yards from their cars.

We loose 4-5 people in our area due to exposure(freezing) every year, every once in a while it ends up being someone I know.

I know you guys don't get the kind of cold we do, but when it goes from 65 degrees (t-shirt weather) to freezing in two hours or less, it catches a lot of people by surprise. Without good clothes most don't make it more than an hour or two.

Blu tac does this awesomely as well... The fuel sets it rock hard . But needit works on other things too ie. exhausts and radiators etc

and just rely on all your mates for the generic stuff

As for Duct Tape, I use a slightly stronger stuff called "Race Tape" or "100mph Tape" fabric reinforced and sticky as anything. Once used it to hold together a spring pack after breaking a mainleaf. Also does a great job at holding in popped windscreens and flapping doors after a rollover.

Other spares I've ever carried for wheeling trips are tcase mounts and a fan belt. Have had to use my spare tcase mounts twice so far.
