Question for those who have fitted a front locker to a GV (Mugwui, Bruce, anyone else?).... what did you do regarding the half shaft and/or CV?

Just tried to fit the front diff from the old SV into the GV steel housing and she doesn't want to play ball. The GV carrier is substantially narrower due to the air actuated crap - and as a result the axle half shaft and stub on the drivers side CV are longer to suit. Hence they end up about 10mm out from where they should be when I fit the new centre.

I presume I'm going to have to source a half shaft from a 26 spline Vitara which will fix the issue, but what about the CV? Will a complete CV from a SV fit a GV? What did others do?

I have never had to create a hybrid shaft for a GV.

If your stub is not driving all the way home look at two things. Is the shank on the stub too larger a diameter for the internal journal on the locker? If so don't modify your CV but rather get the journal machined larger (send me the cap and I will do it for free).

Secondly the circlip may not be driving home correctly. This can be fixed by die-grinding or machining the inner splines on the side gear a little.

Have more of a closer look before making a custom CV setup. If you can send me the stub and locker cap I will make it fit perfectly.

Ninja i had the same problem and i used a complete cv/driveshaft from an SV vit. Fit's perfectly and no issues.

The difference between the SV and SQ driveshafts is the spline is slightly longer on the SV shaft, about 6-7mm from memory. There's some pics of this somewhere in my build thread.

Had some wrong info in my first post sorry - as shabz has said the axle half shaft is too long and the axle stub on the CV is too short so the retaining ring doesn't hold it in.

That is good to know a complete SV shaft can be used shabz, saves stuffing around swapping the inner stubs over. So the middle and outer shafts are identical between a SV and GV? Amazing how so little changed from model to model.

EDIT: Found those pics on page 5 of your thread shabz. Wish I had seen them earlier, would have saved me a bit of stuffing around. Funny that you had so many issues removing the drivers side CV also - I went through the same thing. Silly me slotted the CV into the third member just to see how it fitted. Do you think I could get the fucking thing out again? Took a very big pry bar and a whole lot of smashing with large hammers until the circlip broke apart. Was made a million times worse because the third member just wanted to roll around all over the shop.

Yeah the whole thing is pretty simple....once you've learnt everything the hard way I went to the wreckers about 4-5 times before i figured out i should have just gotten the whole lot first time.

Had a look at my pics again...man i wasn't happy!

The problem is that the differences are so small that you wouldn't even notice them unless you're looking. Good to see you've got it all sorted now
