Jumping off the van doesn't work?

If battery is really farked it might charge up to 12V resting but not have the grunt under a cranking load.

I would go with GeckoXL7's advice.
Start with checking the fuel pump, then the spark etc.
I have a a late 95 swb auto vit that I leave for up to 2 months at a time with the battery disconnected. When I reconnect and turn the key, it fires first time and runs smooth as. Mine also has the alarm crap on it but it has a hidden switch that I just keep turned off.
I know sweet fa about the ecu on the vit, but if its like my hilux, if you remove the battery for 24 hrs the ecu resets back to the factory settings.
See if this makes any difference.
If you have spark at the plugs, I think I read somewhere that you can squirt fuel into the injection system somehow to see if this increases the revs, a bit like the pouring fuel down the carbie trick to diagnose fuel pump and fuel filter probs. :) :)
Sorry I couldn't be more specific. Good luck with the checking.

Kev. :D

X2 on the fuel pump....mine went last week similar symptoms, I could hear the pump running but it sounded 'weaker' the car would run then cut out. I swapped the tank (thanks shep!) and it runs great again.

Did that fuel pump finally die? It was loud from the day i got it, i always worried it would die at somewhere like beachport 8O

Yep it died.....one of the vent pipes had snapped off on top of the tank so I'm guessing dust and sand were getting in there and killed the pump.

Hi Just got back from town and realized I did not mention that when I turn the ign on the Check engine light comes on and just stays on??? I can not remember if it did this before and then went out when the engine started - and remember this is the NEWBIE section.

PS NO THE VIT IS NOT RUNNING - I went in another car 8)

Check engine light on with ign is normal. Can you hear the fuel pump running?

Right I can hear the fuel pump for a few seconds when I turn the key on and have pulled a plug and checked the spark after cleaning and setting the gaps - Result is there is a regular spark at cranking speed but it is orange and weak looking not blue as a normal engine (Non-Electronic) Is this normal or not.

Car still the same - first time starting it fires up for a split second and then dies and after that cranks over but does not fire at all????

I'm still learning efi, but I think a weak spark is a bad thing.
Maybe it cooked something being left on.

Aux/acc shouldn't toast anything as ign left on would, though.

Im now thinking ECU,

Under the dash you should see a 12 pin connector sitting there a diagnostic connector.

looks like this

Image

On pin 9 there should be 5 volts another pin would read 12volt with the ign switch to On Pin 9 should read 5V, if it doesn't then there has to be a blow fuse.
Pin 9 is one of the end corner pins

I have had a blown fuse, fuel pump goes for 3 seconds, there is spark, engine light is on, but as you say Fires for a slit second and cuts out, when i plugged in the Diag tool it had no power, found out a fuse was blown, replaced that everything worked.

Also does your engine use the Dizzy cap or Plug Packs?

If wanted to rule it out as well check voltage to fuel injectors there will be two wires each injector, with ign to on one of the wires should read 12v. connect black neg multimeter wire to a earth, and red + wire to test. may be able to test with one of thoughs 12v test screwdriver things too.

If no power there is usually a earth wire strapped to the motor from the injector harness, check if there is any corosion or crap around it maybe take the screw out and give the connections a bit of a clean.

after this im running out of ideas, as other things wont stop the engine from cranking. engine will crank if ECU, fuel pump, injectors and spark are working all else will just make the engine run in limp mode.

It has a distributor and coil - I just tested the coil resistance as per the manual and the secondary coil resistance is double what the book says it should be.

I have a second parts Vit here but it is a 92 and has a different coil ;<{{

Coil must be bung then..

Mate has a a coil vit, dont look like of the self coils eg could just go to repco and get a bosh coil.

Sounds like a junk yard or dealer trip.

OK - New coil installed and new lead set that I had on hand and still the same - I just about flattened the battery trying to get it to fire so it's back on charge.

Any more ideas?

Is there any way to dump petrol in with these EFI motors? If so how?

Disconnect the fuel in line off the motor, put the line in a container, turn the ignition on and you should end up with some fuel in the container which means the motor is getting fuel. I would also use a different battery, or put a multimeter across the terminals, when you crank the engine if the volts drop below 11ish the battery is stuffed.

I have fuel getting to the EFI unit but that does not mean it is getting into the engine does it?

The Battery is fine. I just turned the motor over so much trying ti start it I made it a bit flat.

Sorry that was the extent of my efi knowledge. So how pissed are you going to be if it turns out to be as simple as a stuffed battery ;)

spray some CRC or start ya bastard down the intake pipe while cranking to see if it will fire.

are you getting an injector pulse?

Red - I am 69 years old and if I can not tell a good battery from a dud one by now I may as well go dump myself down one of the holes around here

Atari - Spray some CRC or start ya bastard down the intake pipe while cranking to see if it will fire. Wheres the best place - Before of after the flow meter?

are you getting an injector pulse? Huh? How would I know
