hi guys i just replaced my clutch in my 89 sierra. the clutch is in and working but now i cant get 5th or reverse. ive replaced the shifter bolt behind the gearstick and it has made 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th alot tighter but i cant move the stick over to 5th or reverse. any ideas

Is the shifter bush there?

when i removed the gearstick there was no bush in there and it worked fine. was a bit sloppy but still went into all gears no worries. now ive replaced the bolt and its alot tighter but no 5th or reverse

pull out your stick and look inside. There are shifter linkages that may need relining up. screwdriver will help.

ive done that to lol. ive got them all in line. even putting it in gear while its running so i know were neautral is and still wont work. even when they are all in neautral

Take the bush back out and see if it will grab the gear. My thought is either the wrong bush or you have a interlock not wanting to play. Did you check the oil level?

i had an issue with the little bolt that sits in the gearbox housing that keeps the shifter lined up breaking and causing all kinds of fun to ensue...........might be worth looking into

thats the bolt that goes in the back of the shifter? if so i have replaced this. its onlly 5th and reverse. i moved the linkages with a screw driver and still cant get them right so that the stick will select 5th or rev

Was the old bolt broken? Perhaps the end of it is inside the gearbox jamming the selectors.

yes it was broken but i havnt had a problem with it untill i put the gearstick back in with the new bolt

I couldn't find reverse and it ended up been a broken spring. When you remove the gear stick it is on the left hand side. It was very hard to bend the spring back at 90 deg and get back into the hole but it can be done.
