Gday guys, Did a bit of a search on here about autolockers, but couldnt find much on them for the Jimny (mk2 non-vvt). sorry if its all been covered before. Im thinking about either getting a LockRight or a Spartan from LROR. Oh and we are talking about a rear locker here. Which is the better brand? How are they for noise? and are they a marathon effort to fit? Ive checked a few Youtoobs and they seem pretty simple in operation and fitment. Do they perform as good as an airlocker? or are they just a PITA? I dont have the budget (or the okay from the missus) to get an airlocker and see this as a viable alternative. Keep in mind my rig spends a lot of time on the road, offroad is mainly rut's and hills etc, not much mud. Also is this LINK going to work in a Jimny? Are the sierra lockers identical? i dont know what to look for to identify them. Cheers for your helps as usual everyone

Jimny rear is the same as Sierra?
I had spartan. It was great. Easy to fit. Tight in its operation for a few weeks. You drive differently around corners. No dramas at all on or offroad.
I bought Lockrites because of price and to try a different brand. If theyre crap ill go back to Spartan.

Your question mark fills me with such confidence Im the one asking the question here.. How long have you had the lockrite for? Just did a bit more looking, seems the spartans are generally accepted as the more "tough" one... would you agree?

one more thing, with the lockrights... they have 2 types 1510 and 1530... one with "couplers" one without... is this a sierra thing? or can it be used on the jim too?

Nup, your diff is the same as a Sierra just a different ratio. If you used two rear Jimny ratios they would work in a Sierra diffs

Ah ok. so still 26 spline then i guess. SWWEEEET
now Im leaning towards the Spartan, seems to be a touch easier to install and possibly a stronger material 9310 vs 8620 (whatever that means). Now im wondering if I should order from LROR for $300inc postage or go local. cyclone sandy has stuffed exports from the states im guessing for now.
Am I correct in the assumption that if you are going around a corner under power/heavy down gearing, you will get the loud BANG due to the wheel forcing the next "notch" and if you just drive "normally" around a bend its fine? Is it a big style adjustment?
Sorry for bulk questions, just trying to get an informed descision happening

I run lock rite rear and spartan front. Both work great, but adjusting driving style is smart with any mod.
I prefer the build and fit of my spartan. Looks stringer, especially the slide pins, and new cross pins.
I only get a very rare bang either end, usually when its locked/wound up an suddenly releases.
99% of the time they both work perfectly smoothly.
They are much better than no locker.
Spools drive easier, more predicatable, but tires wear a lot quicker.
But can attract undue attention when on screechy surfaces, like car parks.

thx for the reply christover. Yeah I aint getting spooled....
Does the frequency/amount of the bang/click have anything to do with the way it was installed? Reading the instructions about the backlash and preload is a little daunting. Are people just sort of winging it when it comes to those settings and discovering that it clicks/bangs a lot? Or should i not worry too much about the backlash if i go ahead with it?

The back lash etc is a diff adjustment that should be done properly. I didn't, and never do, I adjust backlash by feel. Pinion preload is not affected, as no need remove that, unless of course you are doing all bearings etc, as you should, but I never do, unless they stuffed.
Hasn't been a problem for me, but I still recommend doing things right, or getting it done right.
Click and bang with my spartan got better with use, and now don't happen very often at all.
My lock rite only just started small bangs after over 5 years of use on the rear. Lock rites need shimming, so mine may get a new pin, spring and shimm up soon
Or replaced with a Spartan.

I drove a lockrighted 60 series diesel slug in the wet last year and quickly discovered that driving style must be adjusted. I hated it and found that I pretty much had to coast through corners. Didn't get to drive it in the dry so can't comment on that. Maybe it wasn't setup/installed properly!?!
I was glad to give it back.
I do think that an auto locker would be a lot less hassle than a MANUAL locker but not being able to choose when it operated would shit me enough to not bother.

Don't get a 1530 lockright if you are worried about road manners, they miss behave more then the 1510. The 1510 in my front diff has never made a noise and the only way ya know it is working is you can feel the steering unload when ya turn

I'm sure its luck of the draw, after my spartin tried to kill me a few times I replaced it with a cig. tires are cheeper than life, auto lockers are (well mine was) the worst dangerous idea.

I had spartan front and rear in my sierra and daily drove it..
Fitment is easy if you mark exactly where everything is, and the number of turns to get there, the backlash and preload will be exactly the same as they were before you fit the locker.
The dangerous part is it they unload at the wrong moment when you are relying on it being locked to keep you stable.
And yes, you can forget about powering through corners anymore but you get used to it. The most annoying situation is if your going up a steep slippery hill and have one in the front and you need to make a turn and keep the power on to make the hill and cant because you need to lift your foot to turn! This is why its way better to have an airlocker up front.
Panel damage is much more common with a locker too.
I would recommend against one in a DD if you have a lot of bendy roads on the way to work, otherwise go for it in the rear, but when it comes to the front save for a manually operated one.

yeah def's not getting one in the front. Im even dubious getting a airlocker for the front without p/s
I guess ill give it a go. its cheap enough to give a whirl. If i dont like it, im sure someone else on here would be keen to give it a shot, so wouldnt be too hard to sell.

Okay, well ive decided to get one.
Im just waiting on a few replys to emails i sent to the U.S shops to see if they are affected by Shitstorm Sandy before i place an order.
Just to confirm 100% the Sierra spartan with 26 spline is the same as a Jimny one yes? so if i ask the yanks for a Samurai Spartan locker im going to be okay?

On and off the power around corners is gay. Either be on the power all the way, or off the power all the way.
You CAN turn with a locked front its just heavier, not impossible. On high traction rock, I could turn. On loose muddy rutted hills, i could turn.
Lockers give you the ability to tackle harder tracks. Panel damage is up to you.
I daily drove just fine with a locker. I will daily drive 110kms a day with an auto locker rear when it shows up. I prefer driving with the locker, open rear is weird...
Unless you are retarded behind the wheel, they are a great buy.

The rear ARB locker is the same between Sierra and Jimny. I have been made aware numerous times that they are the same. Diff ratio would be the only difference.

sweet thanks Dan. I saw the earlier response saying the same thing too btw. I just like to have confirmation from a few different people before I "lock it in eddie" (excuse the pun)
thanks for the help all of you! I know its been covered before and I hate re-hashing old shit just as much as the next bloke.
Ill let you know how it turns out in my build thread or in here.

Do it, autolockers are awesome when they are set up properly, and there are no air lines or compressors to have problems with.

Haha, well mate I think this is going to be one of those things where you either like em or dont. My experience will probably be different from yours or the next. But ill let you know either way.
@zukmeista... RE: "Setup properly" From what I read in the instructions there is no setting up, just fit n go..... so what are you referring to? I hear that exact sentence often in regards to these things... always wondered what people meant by it.

Not sure about the spartans, but the lockrites need to be shimmed to make them operate correctly from what I understand.
