have you got an airlocker now jonno?

Nothing wrong with my driving style.. that was open diffs..

jimny is unlocked
richy is welded

i am not the only one against them.. just maby the only one to nearly die multiple times because I wasn't capable of setting them up properly.

anyways go what ever way you want.

Fixed it for you.

EADC
as it was stated more than once Spartins dont come with setup settings.. or can you not read?
mine was set 3 fucking times. twice buy me and once buy my best mate (mechanic) once was just chucked in, once was made tighter, third time was set to lockright setup specs..
and guess what? still drove like shit.
there fucking dangerous in the rear of a sierra.
say what you want about a locked diff, at least its 100% predictable, wont lock or un lock and send you in a completely different direction.
also are they legal? i doubt it, so when it sends you into a tree, buy buy insurance.

And guess what the one varying thing is? The person installing them. It just so happens that mine wasn't installed by a two-headed, illiterate muppet so it works fine. :thefinger:

They play up with odd tyre pressure because the rolling diameter changes.
Jf you want a cushy smooth drive. Get a statesman. If you want a budget locked Suzuki that doesnt chew tyres as much as welded and chew your grass up get an auto.locker.

Never had bearing, backlash or tyre wear issues. I had a 1mm~ twist in my axles on 31's but you get that with big tyres.and traction.

A: It's not a Spartan, it's a lockright.
B: Having done my research before I bought it I chose to get it installed by a driveline pro, he had never done it before, but he got it right the first time.

THE REASON WHY THEY DON"T WORK PROPERLY SOMETIMES IS BECAUSE THEY AREN'T INSTALLED PROPERLY
Can you get that into your thick skull already!

anyway, we should probably reign it back to the issue at hand.

Do you really think a locker in the rear would cause such damage? I dont exactly flog it when i fourby.

nah no issue, i just didn't want to be "that tool" that de-rails the thread, i think jonno_miesta have taken that title.

back on topic: if it's shimmed & set up correctly, i think the slight loss in road manners etc will be far outweighed by the gains off road.

haha yeah fair call mate. I kinda expected this to get a bit heated anyway.

The road manners thing is something I can live with, I dont really power in or out of corners as it is anyway. My driving in the zook is much more sedate than my other cars.
Im hoping the SPARTAAAA is easier to "set up" in that it doesnt use the thrust washers, which seems to introduce a bit of a variable in the lockrights. Also has nice new pinion shafts so i dont have to re-use the worn ones.

Im wondering though, without the use of thrust washers, will the spider gears be pushing harder up against them due to the fact they would have made the plates a little thicker to compensate? ie. if i wanted to make them "looser" I wouldnt be able to, but with the lockrights you could remove a washer?

Locker wopuld still function if it was too tight.
Tho clearly not good for wear on gears and housing.
The shims push against the side gear, no pressure on the locking/unlocking bit.
It is too loose that can be a problem,
as the side gears can push away, meaning locking bit can't let go properly.

Only if locker is faulty can the 2 locking bits come together preventing unlocking.

Think that makes sense?
It's how it was explained to me, and it made snce then :)

You dont want them looser that is when they start ratcheting like mad and become unpredictable. I'm pretty sure 93zook and I both have/had lockrights with Sierra diffs. Both cars drive the same tracks ( rocks ), both cars driven with the same amount of enthusiasm, 93zook had 6.5's TC and 3.7's, I had 5.14's TC and 5.12's, 93zook had 33x12.5's I had 33x9.5's his rear axles were twisted pretty bad, mine had been wheeled slightly longer and came out looking like new in fact I think he may still be using one of my rear axles. I have had both good and bad with lockrights, but the bad has not been enough to think the lockers are out to kill me and not enough to make me consider spending the money on an air locker.

so the shims press on the side/spider gears... wouldnt that result in requiring more force from the spring to unlock to the next notch? If thats true, then you could assume that the spartan is already at its required/max shimming distance. (due to not requiring the washers/shim)

When I was having dramas with my last pair of lockrights they had set them up with the maximum suggested gap between the 2 halves and no shims, the lockers would slip when accelerating. I took them back and they shimmed them down to a third of the previous gap and they became a lot more predictable.

This has got me thinking that the lockrights have far more adjustability due to being able to shim the required amount of force to engage and disengage the locker. Whereas the Sparta would only allow you to increase the force required. If for instance you found they banged a lot, you couldnt take a shim out of the Sparta cos there isnt any?

Make sense? am i correct?

The locking mechanism moves away from the side gear, side gear don't move.
Don't need much force to unlock.
When not accelerating.

If side gear is too loose, then it moves with the locking mechanism and stays locked.
The shims put no pressure on the inner unlocking bits.

Yep Thats exaclty how I understand they work too. So my statement must be correct.

The more shimming under the side gears reduces the amount of room the gears have to slide over each other, therefore increasing required torque to unlock. I know the side gears dont move, but the closer they are to the "blocks" then the harder the spring tension to overcome.

So if that statement is true, it would be fairly logical that a lock-right would have more margin for adjustment, due to re-using the thrust washers on the side gears... they become a removeable shim, and you can make it easier on the springs. Or the opposite too of course.

With the spartan, which DONT use the thrust washer. They are already at their so called sweet spot. You can only add shim washers to them, not take any away... as there are none to remove!

would you agree with what I've said? or am I just not getting it? BTW in 2nd drawing, i assume "diff pins" you are referring to the pinion shafts? (the 1 long one and 2 shorter ones)

Yes diff pins or cross pins shafts is what I mean,
ie not the pins that the locker slides on.

Yes if it was too tight locker couldn't unlock at all,
as teeth would still mesh.
Yes less pressure would make it unlock easier,
but not too loose.

Thank you atari. Definitely good tech there.

Hopefully I won't find the spartan too tight, cos I am still leaning towards them at this stage

PS, some people have had to shave the cross pin support blocks, for both types of locker.
Never needed to myself.
Some people have bent or broken the pins in lock rites,
no idea if any Spartans have

Have decided to reshim my lock rite,
can't justify a new Spartan in the rear, while lock rite still working.
Save cash for next trip

One thing to remember is the first few times they go bang you will shit yourself and think that you have left the back diff lying on the road behind you because of the noise they make. After a while they will settle down.
