My Treps were awesome, never had any sidewall issues and they bagged out really nicely under 15psi.

Ok so my mate at bob jane rang me today saying that they are going to stock the Dick Cepek tyres. He wants to put them on my sierra and get the word out about them. He recomended the mud country. He will sell them to me at cost price of $275 each and free fitting. Anyone know if these are any good? Been reading reviews on them from the states and they all seem good reviews apart from wearing too quickly.

Have seen them in action on a mate's Jeep, they seem to work pretty well in mud and sand, not sure what they're like on rock as we don't have much of that over here.

^^ Bob Jayne offered to me too, I usually test tyres and report back on them. read up on them allot Dick only makes 4x4 tyres after having difficulties trying to find tyres that can handle the harsh terrain he was driving (desert)

Apparently they crap all over MT's, Coopers etc etc but not as well advertised or as well known, been around for quite a long time too.

Meant to have good tyre ware as well. On a sierra reocon they will last forever lol.

Bob Jayn has always given me a good tyre, first Yokohama's then Pirelli Scorpians now Bridge stone Desert Duallers AT, im considering the Dicks once my Bridges wear down.

Guess i will find out eventually..

I just put new rims and tyres on my Vitara, I went for a cheapie as its only a shooting rig at the moment (need to find some rust free parts for rego lol). I got 235/75x15 Nexen Rodian MTs and 15x7 speedy desert rats (like sunnies). Pics

I think you might have been drawn in by the marketing a bit there Gecko. Dick Cepek is a Mickey Thompson brand, and are manufactured by Cooper.

Dick Cepek ran an offroad shop in Arizona and died some time in the early 80's, from memory. (just Wikied - 1983 - I remember reading that from contemporary 4WD magazines when his ads were still running) Even by the early 80's, there wasn't all that much race cred about his business - he was something like an early version on 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers or Pro Comp - he sold tyres and lights and cosmetic barwork made by others badged for him.

AFAIK He pioneered large floatation sizes for show trucks, and the icelandic guys still run 44" Fun County tyres lots, as they are a giant but non-agressive tyre that works in the snow, but that's a long way from racing credibility too.



Since 2000, Dick Cepek Tires has been owned by Mickey Thompson Tires, and before I did this research, that's exactly what looking at the tyres lead me to believe - they're clearly now designed by same people who design for Mickey Thompson.... and Mickey Thompson is made by Cooper.

Im being increasingly impressed with my Bridgestones D697 Dueler AT's, its hard to say yet which is a better tire the Pirelli scoripion ATR or the bridgestone, but Pirelli did have better traction on wet roads, but the Bridgeston AT's are way better on wet roads than the Bridgestone Dueler HT's that had no grip what so ever.

In the 4wd mags I've got from the early 80s the impression I get is that Dick Chepek tyres were "the" poser tyre, kinda like centipede style tyres are now.

Stylised side biters says everything to me, designed to look cool under a Bronco.

In terms of pointless 80's tyres for show trucks, there were also the:

i have done some research into tyre size and what they mean and applied it it to common tyres for 98-04 GV's.

eg. KL71's in 225/75r16

so... the first number means the width eg 225 = 225mm wide from the furthest outside portion of the tyre to the furthest opposing inside wall.
the second number mean the % of the width of the tyre that extends outwards from the rim 75 = 75% of 225
and the r16 means the tyre is a radial and the rim size is 16inches.

that means that a 225/75r16 tyre diameter formula should be ((225x0.75)x2)+406.4 = 758.9mm (29.87inches)

Looking at the Goodyear Dura Trac MT 245/75r16
((245x0.75)x2)+406.4 = 773.9 (30.46inches)

i assume the unavoidable rubbing the 245's would do on a GV would be due to the width not having a diameter too large (as its only 0.6" or 15mm each side).. correct?

my next question is is the trimming and rubbing worth the 15mm diff clearence?

Really? I have a good 1-2cms before my tyre would hit the chassis and not even close to the firewall. Mine measure in at 28" though.

I spoke to my mate whose dad runs a b-select. He said the only way he'd sell me the 245's was if I going to put em on the car myself. He also said I'd get targeted for defects heaps. Also if they rub already the 15mm diff lift isn't worth it IMO. I'm happy with the narrower tyres. Hopefully he gets back to me on the prices soon. I asked for prices on kl71's they are basically the same as the duratracks.

for the Adelaide people, i was at Bob Jane at Lizbef this arvo getting my wifes car some new tyres and asked fpr a price on 33x10.5 15 KM2's & was told retail is $458.00 per tyre

Then I hit them with the tirerack.com story & they said no problem, bring the quote in and they will match the price by the yanks including freight, i.e, i was quoted $USD1538.00 for 5 of them frieghted, so they would sell them to me for that price.

I personally would prefer to buy locally and when they are willing to do things like that I will definitely go and see them rather than buy from the US, its just a shame more place cant or wont do the same
