Hi Guys,
My Auto has slowly faded away. Its gone from temperamental shifting and converter lockup, now to what seems like a pretty serious unconnected torque converter at high RPM. Previously i had dropped the pan, and found not a trace of any metal, but replaced the filter and trans oil as well. No luck.
I need an Aisin Warner 4 Speed, mine is an 03-72LE.
Can someone give me any information on what models will fit? I have read here that the AW4 from a J20a will fit, but of course the wrecker told me it wouldn't.
I have had no luck finding out if a Auto to Manual swap is feasible, i cant seem to find a write up of anyone doing it?
I am located in Wyndham Vale Vic.
Thanks a lot;

That could be an electrical issue. Torque converter lock is activated by the ecu. Thats the extent of my knowledge, but is worth it for you to research before buying a new one.

I Will have a look around, play/disconnect the ECU.
Since it started it has been an on/off issue. 4th/OD would sometimes not engage, other times it would. Somedays the car would run perfect, other times error codes flashing on the dash.

The switches/lights for 4L and 4WD affect the operation of OD. 4L light blocks overdrive, which can be disconnected if want OD to work off road. Maybe theres some eath or wiring issues going on.
There is some sort of relay/solenoid that operates the torque converter lock up, maybe research that.
I will need to learn this stuff, too, one day

I think you might have been onto something, i did the test by disconnecting TCM, and the car shifted fine 1st, 3rd, 4th. Obviously i had no TCC lockup though.
I will look for another computer in a separate thread now.
Thanks for your help\motivation.

Hopefully that will cure it.
Or lead to a cure

I'm voting that you have a poor connection somewhere, or a broken wire.
Steve.

Still no love, after a few days of the gearbox running fine in manual mode (ecu disconnected), it just started slipping on the way home. Wouldnt engage 4th at first, then when i applied reasonable load, the RPM would being slipping and increase.
Worried that i should just take it to a shop and have an overhaul.
