My sierra has been sitting for about 8 months and I have finally got it back on the road with the new motor, I went for a drive tonight and the steering seems to be really stiff when driving and doesn't return to centre. I can turn the wheel let go and it will stay there. Not sure what it could be maybe steering dampner? It's a sj70 with standard suspension and 30" tyres

Could be any of the following.

Steering dampener
Siezed king pins/ swivel hubs
Binding uni joint in steering column

Would it be possible for the steering box to have seized?. If it was king pins or Swivel hubs is it possible to free them up without pulling the whole lot apart? Really don't feel like doing that lol

If it were the steering box, it would feel very lumpy through the steering wheel, perhaps may not even turn.

I'd start with the steering dampener and go from there.

Ok so I took it off and jacked the car up. Steering dampner is firm but doesn't push it's self back out( I don't know if its ment to) turning the wheels lock to lock with dampner off it feels stiff, not by and it locks up some times. I checked the oil in the steering box and couldn't see any so I filled it up to about 2 thirds with some 80w gear oil ( don't know what you are ment to use but thought it was better then nothing) have turned it lock to lock for a while and it still feels the same. Do I have a steering box issue? Or swivel hubs/ king pins? If it is steering box can I rebuild it or only replace ?
