Hi guys
New to the forum and did a quick search which brought up all kinds of answers. I am currently running 235/75 MAXXIS Bighorns on black sunnies with an ARB bar and 2" OME lift.
My question is has anyone actually got any proof of a 2" system assisting in low down torque or even a torque increase at all through the rev range? Not interested in extra power or having it louder.
If you could point me in the right direction to some links to further my research or let me know about your own experience with this (ie components used, gains in performance and cost) it would be much appreciated.
Cheers guys
Darcy

Darcy, On such a small motor, the difference will be almost immeasurable. Seat of the pants gains only. I'd guess that at best.....3-5% gain could be had.

That's what I was thinking, I have people tell me all different stories about this topic. Just looking for more opinions that's all. It's a much cheaper alternative to re gearing for the bigger tyres. In the end the fuel economy isn't in any of my concerns, just a bit more torque to pull up the rough climbs mainly.

Reduction gears would far outweigh the exhaust upgrade!

This has come up before. The only solid dump data I've seen for a Jimny showed s reduction in power after exhaust mods. As power is torque x rpm, it would be safe to assume torque dropped too.
Engine mods are no substitute for gears.

A block swap will give you a better gain in torque etc if she is still lacking after better gearing

Ok well what reduction gears are reccomended? What reduction percentages are offered and what work is involved?

She's a 2011
Have looked into the trail jimny 24% reduction gears but with the 235s I am unsure what effect it will have on high range.

With 235's, In Low it will be great off road. 24% takes the gearing to the other side of stock. At highway speeds, you'll be revving at around 4,000. Bearable for short drives but could get annoying on long hauls.

20% would be a better option IMO for 235's
I may have some up for grabs soon... Ill keep you posted.

There's not really any easy options for gearing a Vvt Jimny if you want to retain highway performance and stick with 235s. Jimny_timmys 20% reduction and a set of 31s would work well. If you're more interested in off road performance the 20% reduction with 235s would be pretty good. You could swap to earlier model diffs combined with 20% gears for a better highway outcome.

i have 24% gearing with 30's and sits on 4400rpm at 110km's so i reckon 20% would be too much still for 235's.

I ordered 20% reduction and get the same on 30's at 110km/h Either way, like Zukenutter said, my gears would be great for 31's and highway driving, but the low is just a little too high for my liking on 30's and IMO would be perfect for 235's. but highway will suffer.

If money is not a problem, at around $2k for the gearset, APIO has a 58% low only reduction. You can also combine these with a trialjimny hi/lo kit.

Can you provide a link to a site that resells them? I can't seem to find one. Have heard good things about them, cause honestly low only would be excellent.

on the other end the scale , i beleive a snorkel makes a big improvement - the induction noise is very lound when your on the pedal-(jim seems to be more esponsive ) i havent done the exhaust yet - but fine it hard to beleive a set of headers and pipes would not improve torque ???
i will be doing a exhaust system soon - but will not be dynoing car

Like Steve has said, there are dyno readouts as proof for a jimny showing that there was a decrease in torque and hp. That being said, I can't recall if it was a complete system overhaul?
On the other hand, my exhaust, headers and snorkel combined gave me about a .5-.8l/100km difference in fuel consumption.

I love that mine doesn't drone on the highway like the Black Jim did. I just wind the window down and listen to the induction note through the snorkel instead, cooler sound anyway

Unfortunately though, it might not add any actual performance. If you made a modification to your car and it made absolutely no difference to it's sound, you'd be AMAZED at how much power you'd have to add before you felt the increase. Nobody has EVER claimed extractors made their cars go slower, but the dyno doesn't lie. In some cases, they may well, but because the car sounds faster, your "ear of the pants" is convinced it is. I would imagine the drop in performance by simply adding an exhaust system and nothing else could possibly be attributed to not setting up the whole system and tuning to suit? I would have thought a well sized(read not to big or small) exhaust with free flowing catalytic converter and muffler combined with some better intake flow and an interceptor style chip tuned to suit would make a small but noticeable increase in performance. considering 400-600 for the exhaust if you get it cheap, 900 for the chip and couple hundred for a tune plus what ever the intake costs its not a cheap exercise for a small increase. Having said that if i could measurably increase performance a bit id probably give it a go but im a sucker for after market stuff like that hahaha

^^ Why would someone go to the trouble of driving an hour to Dyno (twice) and then do a backyarder job. Doesn't add up. Doesn't look backyard to me I agree that more info would have been good but this Jimny was written off at some point so I dare say that was the end of the testing/reporting.
