A mate has a 1.5l 1994 Excel which he had for his first car , he only recently stopped driving it , the engine had a rebuild and all , the little bloke gets up over 140k's flat out, and i'm looking at a sierra build up (Completely stripped , rust cut and bogged , Fire engine red paint) but I can't find the traditional 1.3L anywhere , the mates pretty content on just giving me the excel if this conversion would actually work , what do you guys think? How would I connect the transfer case? Any help is appreciated

Forget the transfer, what gear box are you going to find that will fit the motor in a rear wheel drive application ?

There was a Sierra with an excel motor on eBay a while ago, I've got no more info than that. Sounds like a pretty reasonable engine to use.

There was talk about this conversion a few weeks ago on here apparently hyundia motors have been used in GTI's so they maybe a close fit to a sierra box Ill go find the thread now

Ye since the engine and gearbox was free itself pretty much , and it runs perfectly hah . How difficult would it be to create a drive shaft onto a front wheel drive gearbox?

I read it in the ebay thread Fatzook wrote: weedkilla wrote: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Suzuki-Sierra-Stockman-1991-twin-cam-1-5l-hyundai-motor-RWC-/150918950707?pt=AU_Cars&hash=item2323786f33
Is there any sense in this? Why a hyundai motor? Am i missing the point where this is the most random engine swap ever? Great engine, Good power and torque, cheap as chips, and they are more common than crumpledoor motors. Entire cars can be bought for $200. 74kw@6000 134Nm@4000. Better than a G16B!! Makes sense to me. Sorry i had it the wrong way around matty_wall wrote: People use excel gear boxes in gtis so it can't be insanley difficult. I remember seeing a really nice one for sale a while ago. I really wanted to give it a try before I did my conversion.

You need to glue a rear wheel drive gearbox to the motor. Then make a jack shaft to go between the gearbox and transfer

make sure you shave the rocker cover so there is no visible signs that it's a hyundai donk, the zook fanatics might reject it.

1994 excel would be an X2, aka: it's a 4g15 Mitsubishi motor and is not built by hyundai. Typically the GTI crowd are referring to X3 excels with the 4gek engine when they pilfer gearboxes.
The bellhousing bolt patterns are completely different. X2 runs the gearbox on the drivers side, X3 it's on the passenger side.
Whilst it's a potentially workable solution, you would most likely be the first person to use that actual engine. Also that model engine only produces around 61kw at the flywheel in stock configuration.

What problems occur with the bell house being on the opposite side?

Its only plastic so you could stamp Suzuki into it and leave people scratching their heads. Could glue a grill badge to it easy enough too. I'm probably heading to the wrecker tomorrow and I'l be surprised if they don't have one there. I might check out what the sump looks like and get a few dimensions. They sound like the ultimate sierra conversion engine to me, light, comparable performance to a G16b, very reliable, readily available and above all else, cheap. I am of course talking about the bubble shape ones, I wouldn't bother with the Lancer based ones.

I'm sure I've posted this here before, but I can't find it in search. If you were to go the hyundai path you have 3-4 options. My pick would be the "Alpha" engine, 4gek. 1.5l, 12v sohc typically found in '95-98 excels. These are tough, cheap and common. I've had these engines running 11.5:1 static compression for N/A screamers, and running 14psi on stock internals for 70k kms. These engines are designed for factory turbo configuration for the S-coupe turbo. The only internal differences between the Aus released x3 excel engine and the turbo variant are oil squirters below the pistons, dished pistons for lower compression (8.5:1 rather than 10:1). These parts are readily available new from your local dealership. Stock output of 69kw/130nm. You can squeeze 100kw out of these fairly easily on a stock bottom end. If you want a stock engine, There is the 4gfk DOHC producing 75kw/130nm from a 1.5 16v dohc. But its just as easy to use the Beta G4g* engine. 1.6-2.0 litre with up to 100kw/180nm. In the same direction, the theta II "World Engine", a joint venture between hyundai, chrystler and mitsubishi is the same basic form factor and a bolt in conversion to x3's. Unfortunately it's US market only at the moment but the 200kw/30nm power from the 2.0 twin scroll factory turbocharged engine at 18psi would sure open some eyes. Do your research, there are some serious hyundai nuts around if you know where to look.

So would an X3 engine bolt up to a sierra gearbox? Or would I need the X3 gearbox?

Ljv095 wrote: So would an X3 engine bolt up to a sierra gearbox? No. What on earth gave you that idea? You will need to make, or have made, an adapter plate to mount the engine to the gearbox. There may also be clutch and flywheel mods required.

I texted the bloke and he just said it was a sierra 5 speed.
must be a custom adaptor plate of some sort - i was looking into doing this a while ago but plans have moved onto something else.
