Can someone tell me how they work? I used to know, but now I have the dumb.

Also, who make the best ones?

turning the bit on the outside of the hub engages or disengages the axle from the hub/wheel.
AISIN are better than AVM... Don't know about other brands.

How are freewheeling hubs different from standard hubs though?

Don't worry - I thought there were different hubs you could buy to reduce drag ie less moving parts...

f/w hubs like those on sierra's are as good as locking hubs get. every
other system adds ether more parts for the same result or has more
moving bits when disconnected. my wagon only disconnects 1 axle so there
is no drive but leaves the other axle connected to the hub.

My 85 hilux was the same. I think it was the first 3 or four generations had the free-wheeling hubs in the lux.

Yes auto locking hubs come on import sierra's badged as a Jimny

What do you mean by standard hubs? I can think of two meanings

A hub is what you find in the middle of most wheels, wether they be on 4wd's pushbikes, trains or horse drawn wagons. A contains the bearings and basically join the rotating wheel to the stationary axle and stop the wheel sliding off the axle. Is this what you mean by a standard hub.

Some hubs can be used to power the wheel (as in cars) or can used the wheel to power something else. Some of these hubs can be disconected eg you can stop peddling a bike but the bike continues to coast forward, or ground driven machinery can be disconected so they can be transported without turning the machinery over, and also (which you are refering to) a 4wd front axle can be disconected from the wheel when not needed. These are all free wheeling hubs. Sometimes this ability to disconnet the wheel from the drive/driven axles does not exist. Is this what you are refering to as a standard hub?

I was under the impression that the standard hubs found on sierras were different to freewheeling hubs, but now I am aware that I was mistaken.
Please do not try to re-interpret my questions - they have been answered.
