Just demolished my front diff at Loveday. Need a steel one to suit an sv420 but I know they are hard to come by due to demand... Any help please point me in the right direction, based in adelaide.
Cheers

i have a good alloy housing that you could grab cheap & get darky to post just the diff centre, good luck finding one local. you'll pay twice as much as what it would cost to post the whole thing from sydney. pics of carnage NOW!

where & how did you do that looks like it's just the pinion carrier/3rd member, has it cracked the housing part (looks a bit like a banjo) the housing is just sitting there, shoot us a message if you need it

So I guess the so called "pinion carrier/3rd member" is the damaged part. (im no mechanic) Fairly sure the diff centre is cactus given the lack of drive and sounds that bad boy was making. It happened at loveday 4x4 park on a sand obstacle, so no direct impact to casing. Occurred after both front wheels left the ground, upon their return and subsequent gain of traction that a loud bang was heard, loss of drive, bits of alloy shooting every where and me swearing repeatedly.

Yup, that'll do it! Rip it out and check out your ring & pinion gears, but I'd be surprised if they haven't been munched. I can get a weight and freight quote tomorrow, and get it picked up Wednesday. Let me know what you want and where to send it.

Get a steel housing or you'll be struggling again to get another alloy one when that one goes bang!

My steel diff and axle housing was from Qld, it was only $80 for delivery to Melbourne. That was complete with diff and axle still in it. Don't be put off by freighting/postage etc.
Try online parts finders, that worked for me. Have seen GV's for wrecking on face book, too.

Sierra front steel 3rd can be made to fit, not simple, but worth considering, as supplies are better. Or strapping down the alloy diff, to help stop explosions

Mine was from a Manual V6 GV 1998. Pretty sure you need a manual one, though I have heard later model autos had them. The range of models with steel diff is in the Good Tech Bullet proof front diff thread somewhere

ok now im confused.... I require the front differential to fit a 1997 Suzuki Vitara Sv420 automatic 2L Short Wheel Base 4cl. I need the entire front diff and pinion up to where it attaches to the front drive shaft becuase it all messed up bad upon inspection. I have counted the teeth on the crown wheel; 39 and 9 on the pinion part. Im still not sure what ratio it is and apparently the wreckers cant tell me either, theirs is a 39 and 8 which i guess is 4.8.1. Just need to know if it will fit my car?? sorry for asking so many obvious questions but its doing my head in ha ha

Ahhhhh so I would have a 4.3 ratio maybe? 39 / 9 = 4.3

tripple check your tooth count as it doesn't quite seem right to me, was under the impression that the manual SV's were 4.6's & the auto's were 4.8's.
to work out the ratio divide 39 by 9
eg: 39/9 = 4.333:1
mark the pinion tooth you're starting with using a scribe or degrease it & use a texta, maybe with the damage you've missed a tooth when counting?

Is it possible a previous owner did a ratio change?

chris, i've said it before... not too many people bother doing the swap & why would you want to go from a 4.8 to a 4.3, would make it sluggish as hell???
plus, i'm certain it was a pristine one owner unmodified example before he picked it up.

so really I should have 39 on the crown and 8 on the pinion ; 39/8 = 4.8. The pinion is very munched so hopefully im just an idiot, ill check it tonight again.
