Last weekend had a wheel planned. The first hill climb of the day got to the top of the hill and the GV sounded like a tractor. Took it back to the farm to passenger with B4T for the weekend and on the first downhill the tractor noise dissapeared. Still left the car and drove home Sunday no issues.
Today went down the hill from Emerald to FTG and then on the way home the GV was under powered, and the rattle came back. AND got pretty serious hot nearly up to the red just below where I would shut down and get towed to work. Made it to work alright and got a vid of the noise. Now I'm going to a new radiator, water pump and thermostate but thats not going to fix the tractor noise.

The car is only 2600k's into the service. I'm running 15w40 oil in the car and it has since I got the car over 12 months ago and it the first issue I've had. One lube book recomends 15w40 the other is 10w30 and there is fuck all difference over 5w on a 11 year old car but will flush and change the oil to 10w30 tomorrow.
My question is what the fuck has gone wrong?? I can do the basic stuff to eliminate shit but if someone has come across this issue before and has some pointers.

To me it sounded like the timing chain wasnt getting any lube. Noise was all at the front of the motor.

Yes sounds like its coming from the front. When I get this car off the hoist this morning I will get the stethoscope onto it and diagnoise where the rattles coming from.
Timing chain replace? Thats a fairly straight forward fix but would it help?

All timing chain problems in my past were related to auto adjuster problems.
Have no idea whats inside these motors.
Not that I have great hearing, but it does sound timing chain ish.
Do these motors get the same crank pulley coming loose issues as the 1.6?

Sounds like you have a hydraulics issue. If the sound comes and goes I think you have a blockage.

Run some Nulon oil flush OR put about 500ml of diesel in the oil and idle for about 10-20 minutes. If the noise goes away you have a gummed up tensioner etc.

I have a bottle of flush here. I ripped the radiator out and it was a solid block of fucked (you thought the mess on your driveway was bad Joe! ) I'm going to put the new radiator in when it arrives hopefully this arvo, flush the oil and drop in some more good stuff in and see if that fixes it. I spoke with the blokes from Suzuki and the get the bits to do the timing chain is $556 with the guide so hopefully I don't need to do that :p

do an oil flush like joe said and i said on the weekend and go from there...... Don't go getting to far ahead of yourself. start with the simple stuff first as thats quite often overlooked.

how sludgy is it when looking in the oil cap hole at the inside the rocker cover?

Without knowing the service history id expect it to be similar to that....And just because you keep putting new oil in it as its burning it doesnt mean you dont have to change the filter.
