WA was the first to try NCOP, i think it came in here in 2008, as my build started before NCOP was adopted - the mods i've done arent do-able under NCOP, so once i was all done and had done the lane change etc etc the engineer had a shitfight with them to allow it to be rego'd - it passed all the tests the NCOP would have asked for anyway, and because the approval pre-dated the introduction they had no choice but to allow it... now they have a 2 year limit on any modification applications to try stop things like that happening.

yes you can get defected for them, just like you can defected for not having water in your washer bottle... just depends on your attitude & the cop at the time.

YES. Cops can stick on a canary even if they aren’t sure about the law. If the cop thinks you should get one you will get one, they usually put on the 1 defect they want to get you for then add on things like dirty number plates and chipped windows for the trifector required.
They can write whatever they want and force you to have the car go over the pits to make sure. You would then have to take it to court after it passed because you were right and the cop was wrong and ask to be compensated for your time and money, and fail, you might get out of the fine if your lucky.
I’ve heard of people getting a canary when the cop wanted check the chassis & engine numbers, but not do it themselves because it was muddy under the car. Which is clearly wrong, but they did it anyway.
I was pulled over in my 1l sierra so many times and never got defected and talked my way out of quite a few speeding fines.
In my SWB pajero once they wanted to defect me for tires and give me 3 fines for speeding, failure to indicate and more speeding. At the end he said: "congratulations you have talked your way out of >$700 worth of fines" The cop was a crazy person, his parter and I were laughing about how riled up he was getting, I was calm as a cucumber and he was wondering why I wasnt getting upset.... I was helped that I had them talking for sooo long they got a call they decided to take it instead of disussing the cops anger issues anymore.
It all comes down to the cop.
Most mechanics wont even pickup an auto locker in a roadworthy. They will just notice excessive backlash.. How is a cop going to tell unless he askes you (dont lie though).
So what to do? A nice tight LSD or manual (air or whatever) locker in the rear and and a manual locker in the front. or none.
I had duel spartans in my last sierra. I didnt like the one in the front occationally. I would happily put on in the rear of my Jimny, but over here welding a diff is legal.

99% of cops probably don't know what an auto locker is anyway. I'm sure most wouldn't believe you that it's meant to make the clicky bang sounds either.

Police arnt engineers, mechanics or any other sort of trade so all they can do is stick a sticker on if they think it could be dodgy.
As for auto lockers being illegal, I reckon no authorities in any state would give a toss that I have one in my front diff.

As for auto lockers being illegal, I reckon no authorities in any state would give a toss that I have one in my front diff. Technically speaking you can control the use of the front one from the drivers seat via shifting from 4x4 to 2x4 and vice versa. I can't see how anyone can argue they can control a rear auto locker from the drivers seat to lock and unlock at a specific time, so how can it be legal?

Lockers will make ya get stuck worse then no lockers. If ya zook is for solo wheeling like hunting and fishing then self recovery is more important then traction aids. In my opinion there are no decent commercially available winch bars so you will need to make your own.

And Shep is definitely the one that knows what he's on about with that, I'd listen to him and then with all the money you save on not need to pay a recovery vehicle you can buy real lockers instead of unlockers.

Bit of a grey area really but they don't actually "lock" as a locker does. They allow a wheel to overrun the crownwheel and let a vehicle turn a corner but drive both wheels again in a straight line. I think by the law's definition they're not actually a locker. That's not to say they're safe on a wet road in a Sierra with a 1.6, fat tyres and a P plate.
