Loving the forum, very informative. Been doing a lot of searching, yet im still a bit confused.
Thanks for taking me aboard!

Ide like a more aggressive look for the Jimny but without going down the costly lift scenario if possible.
I have a few questions that ive been unable to source direct answers to! Try not to flame me too hard, I’m not exactly a mechanic! :D

If I just want to upgrade the suspension does this automatically change the ride height? Is this worth doing?

I’m under the impression that the standard tire size is 205/70 R15. Is there a mud/all terrain tire one can get without requiring lift and/or messing up transmission/speedo/body work? Can’t seem to find a good tire at 215/70/15? Was planning to put them over black sunraysia’s. Is this a bad idea due to extra weight?

It seems as though 215/75/15 is more popular but the increased diameter would require a slight guard chop and puts the transmission under more strain?

So confused.

I'll let the jimny guys offer help, but let me just say,
you can string a sentence together, have tried to search and have asked detailed questions.
you will go far here if you keep that up :D

Yeah the standard tyre size is 205/70/15
Maxxis does a mud terrain in 205/75/15 http://www.maxxistyres.com.au/tyredetai ... d=13&cat=4
and an all terrain in stock sizes http://www.maxxistyres.com.au/tyredetai ... d=37&cat=3
there are a few others around.
I dont know myself as yet but from the amount of people running 215/75/15 i doubt theres any real issue with the gear box except it being a bit slower. as far as gaurd chop goes it looks like only the Jimny's that have the bigger front end in the newer style have an issue with tyres rubbing but i doubt its much cutting to fix if at all.

I would say theres no real point changing suspension components unless your looking to raise the ride hieght unless you have a preference in shocks or are carrying constant loads. the stock suspension is pretty decent as far as im concerend but will be putting a small lift in it soon.

theres plenty of guys on here with heaps of knowledge so one will come along soon.

Also just been told by tyrepower they have an issue putting 215/75/15's on the stock sized wheel. They said it needs to go on a 6inch wide rim. Is that right?

I can't see how .5" is gonna affect 5mm of tire?

215's are fine on the stock 15x5.5" rims :)

Yes, 215's are fine on 5.5" rims, but if the book says you can't do it, a tyre shop is being negligent (technically) if they fit them. These are businesses with insurance.

Rims step in 0.5" increments, The line will always be drawn somewhere. If the limit for a 5.5" rim was 215 not 205, then surely a 225 would be OK too, it's only 10mm more tyre... etcetc.

Hey,

Thanks for the responses...

so what your saying is standard rim width is 5inch but to fit a 215/75/15 its safer to put on a 6inch?

Do sunraysia rims add alot of weight?

saw some kumho venture P215/75 15 online... hmmm

Yeah I can see how that can be a confusing contribution on my behalf :(

IIRC, 235's need a minimum of a 6" rim, but 215's on a 5.5" are perfectly legal :)

Iirc? Is there something that tells me the 215/75 is legal? The tyre person was pretty adamant they were illegal on the 5.5 rim.

I have 215/75/15 BF Goodrich AT's on the same rims. The BFG Website says these are pefectly fine on a 5.5" rim and within their recommended range. I have found them to be perfectly a safe fit. Try to find the offical page for the brand of tyres you are considering to see the recommended rim widths for that manufacturer.

Legality might be a different question, however. I know that Qld members on here have said that as an approved vehicle modification, 215/75/15 tyres are TOO BIG to be accepted as legal on a Suzuki. It's not the tyre to rim combo, but the stock size to modified size increase that rules them out. Is that also the case for WA?

There are multiple brands that do Mud tyres or All-Terrain tyres in 215/75/15. I had Hankook Dynapro Mud Tyres on stock rims and worked well.
Also at that size of tyre they shouldn't rub with no lift, i ran these tyres on my 2011 Jimny at first and had no scrubbing, only when i nose dived the car into mud or something and it pushed the bottom of the bumper into the tyre.

As far as the quality of tyres also ask Jimny91 how Dynapro's are, i onsold these tyres to him and he has gave them a good workout.

My shortlist so far in no particular order:
Bfg a/t 215/75 - $290ish
Kuhmo kl78 215/75 - $230ish
Maxxis mt 753 215/75 or 205/75 - $210-$220

Thanks again! So it appears as though 215/75 is generally touted as being problem free on stock Jimnys?

Does it improve the overall ride/quality?

or would the Maxxis MT753' just be a hassle free alternative?

yeah the 215/75's dnt give u much trouble.. Ull feel a bit of drag to take off especially on hills, but is not really that much to be a big deal.

if not ull travel at a lower rpms .... the only thing is u have to be aware that you would be traveling 5km/h faster than the speedo reads

other good thing is that you'll gain 1" of clearance as being a bigger tyre

The 413 I have came with 30/9.5 on the 5.5 rims, you can certainly feel them "squirm" on the road but on the upside the narrow rims are far less likely to roll a bead, once I was wondering bout the front left looking a little low - turns out I had been running round with 5psi in it on seal for a day or 2 (think it was tues after a weekend trip).

On the downside I towed a trailer on the weekend put it in low4 without the hubs as was strugglin.......

"You know your low range is too high when" you can do 80k in low 5th at around 3500revs

The BFG mud terrains at 215/75 are excellent - plenty of grip offroad and no real issues with gearing. I had to trim my front bumper to get them to clear but others apparently haven't had this issue. On the VVT Jimny they have the added benefit of making the speedo read correctly.

Dan, bought mine from tirerack.com for about $1100 delivered for a set of 5. no issues on road, still grip and stop okay, and only a small amount of additional noise over standard.

I have the 215/75/15's on 6 inch rims. My trye shop ordered the tyres and rims and fitted them. When I went to another tyre place later for balancing they also did the sums and said thay were fine.

This size tyre corrects the speedo perfectly but you do feel the slight extra loss of torque on uphill runs in 5th gear. This is the biggest size I would suggest with stock gearing.

Hey,

Let me just say, you guys are frikn helpful! Love it.

I'm still thinking the most hassle free option is 205/70 R15 mud.

Found these
http://www.maxxis.com/AutomobileLight-T ... eries.aspx

and

http://www.maxxis.com/AutomobileLight-T ... pador.aspx

Anybody use these before? Has anybody used stock mud/AT size?
Im thinking wider tire with 70 height is not possible...

Anything would be an improvement over Highway tread, but you might find the 205/70's still fall into some of the bigger holes offroad, and will start to look a little small if you put any lift underneath it in future.
