Whatsthis

If you are planning on mud driving the small extra tyre diameter of the 215 may be a benefit. One of the problems of mud driving with small wheels is being caught up in the wheeel ruts of bigger cars and bottoming out (and a suspension lift won't help that). If you are sticking with 205/70/15 then maybe think about what sort of off road driving you really want to do. That size might be better in an all terrain for general road driving and off road touring.

I'm with Mike. If you're buying tyres, my opinion is step up a size, you'll barely notice the gearing change and may even prefer the slightly taller gearing when touring.
Buy yourself a set of 15 or 20mm spacers for your coils, this lift won't need any other expense, will retain stock handling, and give you a little extra underbody and tyre clearance.

Thanks again! So it appears as though 215/75 is generally touted as being problem free on stock Jimnys?

Does it improve the overall ride/quality?

or would the Maxxis MT753' just be a hassle free alternative?

Just a comment about this whatsthis,

Larger, heavier, and more agressive tyres don't/wont improve ride quality. Firstly, the added weight increases unsprung weight. This reduces ride quality all by itself. The tyres you're looking at are all a "mud" tyre pattern. The increased void between the tread blocks increases noise and harshness. These tyres are all rated for more load carrying, and are more stiffly constructed to prevent damage in off road conditions. This reduces their ability to conform so they will ride more harshly. Lastly, because they carry more rubber in the tread, there's generally more variation in the tyres, meaning they aren't as round and don't balance as well.

The message is that buying more aggressive tyres to improve the "look" of a car will compromise its performance on road to some extent. Many of us are willing to put up with that compromise for an increase in off road performance. It's not really clear if you're looking for an increase in offroad performance though.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with trying to replace the stock tyres in a more aggressive pattern under any circumstances. They're an uncommon size, with few pattern/manufacturer choices. They will compromise the road behaviour almost as much as a 215/75 in any case, but you'll be stuck with stock ground clearance of you do decide to venture off road. A 70 aspect ratio isn't suited to off road driving due to the very short sidewall it creates. 215's seem quite a good balance under a Jimny without other modifications.

Steve makes some good points there. Further to OP question and adding to Steve's points you'll get one handling benefit from a heavier duty tyre over the stock Bridgestones which is you'll have less wallowing when cornering. Those Bridgestones are super soft and IMO are quite dangerous at high speed.

Here's a 215 on the rear of my Jimny compared to a 205 stocky

I’m under the impression that the standard tire size is 205/70 R15. Is there a mud/all terrain tire one can get without requiring lift and/or messing up transmission/speedo/body work? Can’t seem to find a good tire at 215/70/15? Was planning to put them over black sunraysia’s. Is this a bad idea due to extra weight?

There are multiple brands that do Mud tyres or All-Terrain tyres in 215/75/15. I had Hankook Dynapro Mud Tyres on stock rims and worked well.
Also at that size of tyre they shouldn't rub with no lift, i ran these tyres on my 2011 Jimny at first and had no scrubbing, only when i nose dived the car into mud or something and it pushed the bottom of the bumper into the tyre.

As far as the quality of tyres also ask Jimny91 how Dynapro's are, i onsold these tyres to him and he has gave them a good workout.

there fucking good. mud, rocks, beach i have been on everything with them and love them. be better in 235/75 though.

The day I bought my Jimny I drove from the dealership to my mates house which is no more than 5k's away, it is was drizzling rain and the ass slid out on most corners.

On the first service I was asked whether I was satisfied with the car, my reply was that they can stick the shitty road tires up there ass.the mechanic drove the car around and he even agreed that they are dangerous.

The following week on my way up to kingaroy I picked up the hankook dynapros. i felt much more in control and safer on mud tyres on the way back thani did driving up on road tyres.

:deadhorse: shit road tyres lol I've had my rant.

Woaa! Epic details.. Thanks everyone.

My interest isnt purely cosmetic despite sounding otherwise looking back. More so safety. Need a tire that inspires more on road confidence to be honest whilst also offering a better offroad/sand experience. 2 birds with one stone. Im just not in place to afford lifts etc right at this moment.

The stock tires whilst fun, make it somewhat of a white knuckle ride! Especially after rain. Fun though, kinda takes me back to my late 70s beamer. Still...

I got some quotes for some 215/70/15 's but even they said ide need a lift etc.

But in reality you guys seem to overwhelmingly agree that this size is fine on a stock Jimny.
So i guess thats that.

A good AT 215/75/15 is the verdict without other mods?

I have a 2010. Does this change anything

You'll get a little scrubbing on the front bumper - I had to cut mine.

Its arguable I think that 215's fit with no trimming, if you have to trim it would only be a small amount.

215 may scrub a little but a 20mm spring packer should be enough to fix that.

I have the 2009 model but an ARB bar so I did not have to trim. I also have a 40mm lift so no experience with stock height.

so it looks like you are after a A/T more kind of tyre instead of a M/T

I got Federal Couragia A/T on my jimny and so far, I had no problem at all with them

they where cheap, have driven in slight dirt/rock/mud and no problem, also Ive never get scared by driving on rain... my previous 4WD back home with M/T tyres used to slip all the time, same with the chevy SUV I used to drive before that with road tyres... so I have that "scared push line" when Im used to know when my car is about to slip, and no problem with the jimny whatsoever

I havent drive on sand yet, or in extreme mud conditions, but so fr so good with this tyres. They have a very agresive pattern for a A/T tyre IMO

thanks mate. They are close to the front bumper but seems ok so far. this after noon im gonna flex it up a little and get some lock to lock going see how it goes. ill drop some air out this arvo. car sits at a good height i reckon. for me and my driving a 40mm lift will be more than enough once i get it in. even stock im pretty happy with the height now.

You will find the bottom of the bumper may touch the wheels when you get out and about. Just grab the bottom and gently pull it out, they have crap metal bracket supports along the bottom that are really soft. Other than that you should be good to play on.

Thanks Skippy. I took it for a bit of a wheel and had no scrapping yet. didnt get full flex i dont think but gave it a decent go and nothing touched. they handled really nicely and are much smoother than the stockers now ive dropped the pressures right down.
