As a road mt apart from the pompoms visual appeal the kl17's actually worked well with the side lugs etc (brought a nissan wearing them) I feel they would wear really well under a light weight zook, the maxis mudders are ok but poo really if you need some side bite, the bighorns look sweet but cost. Whats the opinions on the achilies mt/ mtx?

what lift have you got and what terrain do you drive? i have 31" bighorns on my swb vit, would get them again anyday of the week.

i wouldnt go KM2, they are very closed pattern and the cost is huge. i think you should only got bighorns or treps, i havent seen a comparison done so not sure which is best. but i vote the bighorns.....old style 762, new 764 looks crap.

there isn't a great deal of difference between the 2? all 3 have a similar void to block ratio & the new 764 bighorns look heaps like very similar to the old style MT/R's 8)

Wow, how far has this thread headed off topic :D I keep forgetting it's all road tyre talk now and I keep checking on it to check on the hektikness.

Back on track. 8)

THAT's a really aggressive, offroad only tyre, not a KM2 or a bighorn. They are road tyres which are also pretty decent offroad, considering their road manners.

In all seriousness, A super agressive 7.50 16 would fit the requirements of the original post just fine.

Somehting like this:

Image

These are pioneer 7.50 16's. They exist in Australia, there was a guy racing Finke on a set of 9.00 16's. He reckoned they'd done umpteen seasons of Darwin mud racing and they still looked good.

no point wasting an expensive radial carcass on an off road tyre where it can't do any good.

That may well be true, but that perhaps highlights the problem of the original post. "Extreme" "Offroad only" tyres normally require a well built car, almost irrespective of the size. I'd also add they really need beadlocked rims to get the best out of them.

I'd love to try a set of those Pioneer's in 9.00X16.

Probably the worst tyre ever for Finke, but I reckon they'd work a treat in Vic in winter.

Steve.

For just mud my pick would be silverstone extremes - work very well in mud, but suck just about everywhere else

For a mix of rock/mud/sand my preference would be
-treps
-TTC claws
-km2s

I was going to get treps for my LWB but there were none in Aus in the size I wanted at time and no one could tell me when there would be  so needed up with claws.

I hate claws. I'm biased, I had some 35" bias claws a long time ago and they redefined horrible. It wasn't because they were bias - the carcass worked fine, but the tread design is all wrong IMHO. They worked OK with the front tyres on backwards though.

KM2's seem to work quite well for a daily-drivable tyre. The massive win is that they come in 33 10.5, making them close to the bestest suzuki tyre ever.

I have very limited experience with non-comp treps, but I think I'd give up a kidney for comp treps in 35 12.5

Swampers still bring the win as an all-round off road tyre.

This car

ran sharp 33 12.5 swampers and it worked awesome. It's now stepping up to Krawlers because they are betterer, but I bet the owner is going to wish he still had the swampers on it from time to time.

i didn't think that there was much difference between the new & old apart from the side biters? :?

have they made the side walls stronger than the old ones.

On the contrary, when we put the quads tyres on backwards, they work twice as well. The problem is you can't reverse out of the shit you drive into.

Centrifugal force does more than the tread pattern IMO.

We don't drive tractors here on AZ do we? :thefinger:

Tractor tyres work by using the weight of the vehicle to push the lugs (which are very skinny and stiff in relation to the size of the tyre) into the ground in softer stuff(eg grass, dirt, sand), then the surface area of the tyre to stop you from sinking further, they're designed to "clog" because that's what gets the traction and epic pulling power. What's left in the tread just gets squished out of the way when it comes back into contact with the ground. 0% relevant to Suzukis.

You got me to type lots, happy? :thefinger:

gitfookedkent. :thefinger:

FWIW, my KM2s (30x9.5) were faultless in the road, literally no noise (they were fitted to a 1l soft top sierra though, so not the quietest car around) and handled very well. They were brilliant in sand but pretty meh in mud. I'm a farmer so I'm used to the traction a properly aggressive tyre gives you in mud, Km2s are not even nearly properly aggressive...But then they don't deafen you at 30km/h either. :D

My bartreads (see pic below) were a better off road tyre in everything I tried, but they were fitted to an LJ. :P They're pretty much deadly in the wet, like full lock top gear power slides on tarmac in a car with 41hp sorta deadly.

Image

KM2s are the best all rounder that I've ever seen, great on the road and quite good on most surfaces. Ultimate tourer tyre.

yes i've seen them in 30's & 35's.

do you buy tyres cause they have a nice typeface? that's the sort of thing alien would do... no one i know is lame enough to run the white writing on the outside so it's not really a problem.

I don't really see the issue with the size of the writing

Specifically making an effort to be cool, isn't cool.

I'm lazy and just run the tyres in what ever configuration the tyre guys fit them to the rims.

And who cares the white writing is hard to see once they get used a bit anyway.

As an all-rounder tyre the 764 bighorn functions very well,
Off-road they function pretty well in most conditions, not as great as aggressive tyres in mud (where wheel speed isnt achieved), but with wheel speed, they can perform very well.

the 764's were on my short list along with the couragia's, ended up with km2's cause they came up cheap on here.
