Helping my brother do his timing belt but the timing marks are lining up on number 4 TDC about to fire not number 1. The book he has is not specific on when it is meant to line up just says crank sprocket mark to top, cam sprocket mark to top.

The car goes with it lined up like this, should I just leave it?

Also he ordered the wrong belt, it is too narrow and has square teeth, he needs one with round teeth. Does anyone have the part number?

Yes it is lined up correctly.

And on 4 cyl engines, irrespective of cam timing or ignition timing, the pistons in no1 and no4 cyls will be at the same piston position at all times (TDC, BDC, etc), while the pistons in no2 and no3 cyls travel together. So when you say No4 is at "TDC", but No1 is not, that can't be right. But "about to fire", No1 and No4 are 180 cam degrees apart, or 360 crank degrees.

Yeah sorry. I guess "about to fire" is also ambiguous so maybe "just sparked" is a better description.

Number four TDC just sparked, number 1 TDC just finished exhaust stroke/ about to start intake stroke, marks are lined up as shown in book.
Number one TDC just sparked, number 4 TDC just finished exhaust stroke/ about to start intake stroke, crank mark is as book shows cam is 180 degrees out.

For the purpose of timing the cam, it doesn't matter what cylinder is doing what, as long as whatever is sposed to be lined up with whatever is

many engines out there don't really line up to anything to do with the ignition

If you need the part number for the belt you can remove the top bolts for the plastic cover and read the part
Number on the belt by looking inside
