What do people recommend for lighting?
Was looking at some HID spotties but now i'm looking at LED bars.

Really all depends what type of country you drive, ie hilly windy country won't need pencil beam spoties that light up the road for 1k, if you drive in country occupied by our friendly long tailed jumping bastards a more spread beam would be required to spot them in the table drains, edges of roads ect. I personally drive skippy prone country so I will require more spread than most people, mates run 2x hid pencil beams and elcheapo halegon spots at the bottom of there bullbars pointing towards the gutters.

yeah go for both.

Lightbars are awesome alright, but i dont reckon they have the throw that spotties have. LED are awesome at lighting up the road fringes though, and much better offroad as well.

got a set of 60w led "work lights" that would beat most spotties you'd be looking at in terms of price, but as mentioned, hid spots with a light bar is what i run

You won't get a light bar that throws further than spotties. The most you'll get out of a light bar will be around 300m MAX, but you will get reflections for 1000m+ and you can see the sides of the road really well.

Like people said, go for both. A light bar will give you 200-300 meters of light (Depending of size of bar) then you have 2 "SPOT" beams penetrating down the road 700-1000 meters.

What size lightbar? Whatever fits your car/budget, most people run 20" on the bullbars above their spotties. Roof mounting people will mostly go for a 30" or 40".

Light bar I mean, yeah I will be mounting it ontop of the bullbar so if a 20" is good enough I'll get that

LED is for spread not distance. Great for night drives in the bush, but not the best on the open road in terms of distance. HID and LED FTW...

I'd rather go some good halogen or hid spotties over LED work lights.

LED lights that have 4 to 6 LED's such as those are great for general wheeling at night, or for use as work/ camping lights. Out on the open road they leave a little to be desired. Don't get me wrong LED's are the future and I run LED's but something that small would not be in the class of your average 9 to 10" spottie or driving light out on the open road. But I would still rather those for 4 wheeling at night.

i've seen 55w hid lightforce 210's combined with a 30" lightbar (or close to that size, dont know exact) and honestly you could not expect any better without the sun in the sky. best part, between those two you're drawing maybe 300-350w max between those, even a standard sierra alt could handle that.

Your larger IPF's and Hellas are around the 9" mark and they do fit.



But as you have done the minimum I would suggest would be 6 LED's per light.

How did those led lights go? They look massive can you get them in a 7"?

Bare in mind in WA at least there is a rumour that the cops will have a hissy fit if your lights arent in pairs.

Same in QLD. However there is technically a grace period until September 2013 that police are not allowed to fine you for uneven LED bars/bars without dividers.

That is an ADR that covers all of Aus. Lights have to be grouped in pairs (measurements are also part of it). Putting a 'divider' on a light bar is still not legal. But you won't hear people who sell you light bars tell you that.
