2005 jimny vvt manual 88000
Mods 215 Km2
Jimny has a slight shudder when idling for more than 4 minutes. ive done some research and this problem may be solved with a crank engine sensor.

i did a service about 4000kms ago which consisted of spark plugs, oil change, oil filter, air filter and a oxygen sensor, as i had a check engine light and that was the problem. when i did this service i pulled out one of the coil packs and the rear coil pack that has the plug attached had snapped off, i glued it back on, could this be part of my problem as well?
if so i have bought a genuine coil pack to replace it but i only bought one, should i replace the one or should i replace both at the same time?

my fuel economy is getting worse i got about 400 to about 450 out of it when it was running good. but now im only getting between 330 to 350 out of a tank.

Thanks Doug

If your Jimny was fine before, and you have found a coil pack with the plug snapped off, then i would say, replace the coil pack, as it sounds like its arcing out somewhere and not getting spark to the spark plug, and also check O2 sensor connection/plug, and then go from there, and see if it gets better... :D

Did you check the gap on the plugs before putting them in?

So i should just replace the one coil pack then? And not worry about the crank engine sensor?
And just see what happens?

With the spark plug gap it had platinum plugs ifr6j 11 in it and i wasn’t to sure if these come out from the factory like this if so i only got 82,000kms out of them and they corroded , and i didn’t have the money to buy platinum plugs, so i just put standard plugs in bkr6e. I checked the gaps and they all look the same.

rhino man whats your opinion on buying a cheap engine light reader as im pretty sure my car is obd2, just to see what kind of codes it throws out while driving, and do you reccomend any?

Spark plug gap should be set with feeler guages to the gap specified in the manual.

how bad a misfire are we talking about here? 4 minuites is a long time for it to run fine and then start running poorly.

It doesn't run poorly at all it just has a slight shudder for 1 to 2 seconds, and this maybe happens in one to two minute intervals while still running when idling.
The spark plugs in the picture are the old plugs. I will get a measurement of the new ones when I put the coil pack in and check the oxygen sensor.

I think that ba 2005 is unlikely to be OBD2, its much more likely to use a proprietary implementation of KWP2000 that Suzuki call KWPSDL. have you got the six-pin diagnostic plug.

What you just said I don't really understand but I kinda do. My jimny I can not use the paper clip method as I do not have the wires to do it. I've got the plug under the steering wheel that the scan tool plugs into. I've had a work shop plug a scan tool into it before which confirmed that I needed an oxygen sensor.
Here some pics of my plug and another plug
03' non vvt jimny and its got this plug, facing the plug its got a grey wire top middle, red bottom right, pink bottom middle and black bottom left. but my 05' vvt jimny has the same plug but only two wires. facing the plug black is bottom left and pink is bottom middle.

It would be worth trying an OBD2 on that. I can't read the number on the ECU, what is it?

Lol I was underneath the foot well with a torch looking at the numbers and when I was done realised I could of just taken a photo of it. Instead of backspacing my hard work I decided to leave it up.

EC = European so that should be OBD2, as its RHD then it must be a UK model but I've not come across it so far. I'll have a look on the parts database tonight if no one else has.

The ELM tools are pretty good but I find a handheld, although more expensive, is easier to use. Look for a tool that can display live data as they are way more useful. I haven't personally bought any of the cheaper tools as I have a selection of stupidly expensive dealer tools that can do all the extended diagnostics as well as generic OBD2 - these are a necessity of my business. I'm sure there are others on the forum with the knowledge.

Doesnt the ecu have a diagnostic mode where it flashes the codes on the check engine light?

That plug is not your OBD2 plug. You'll find it behind here on a VVT Jimny,

Image

It looks like this, slim and black. It's hard mounted and faces towards your shins

Image

If you have a smart phone you can but an ELM Wifi or bluetooth reader, download a code app and get live updates while you drive.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Non VVT had OBD2 plug but not compliant with readers. VVT is compliant with OBD2 protocols.

My VVT Jimny has a slight shudder while idling too, haven't figured it out yet, I get no codes, just a miss once per minute'ish.

I can't make that out very well in the pictures but if its like a lot of other Suzukis then you can rotate the connector 90 degrees which makes it easier to drive with the tool plugged in.
