G'day, need some help from some people with zook knowledge. My 89 wt Sierra won't hold an idle when I slow down at traffic lights etc and will just stall. Any idea on what is causing this? Checked spark plugs and they are okay. Thought it may have been bad fuel but I have run at least 2 tanks of fuel since it started.

Idle jet is blocked in the carb is my guess.

take carby hat off, rev up the engine & with a rag bunched up in you hand smother the carby until in nearly dies, this usually sucks the crap out of the idle jets etc..... repeat as necessary.

Hey josh,

Had the same issue with mine, if you can't clear the idle jets by backfiring. Then I pulled off the carby pulled both lower jets out cleaned, put a small filter between the pump and carby replace the fuel filter, drain the tank and refuel tank with fresh fuel start her up should be fine:)
I spent hours tearing my hair hopefully that fixes urs and saves you a heap of time!

I dunno if its the same for all sierras but there is a shut off solenoid on the front of the carb. The orrifice it goes in gets clogged very easily. Feck the solenoid off put a bolt in there. then if it happens again just take the bolt out, spray some carby cleaner in there.

Check the fuel filter at the rear of the car in front of the fuel tank I removed mine and put the filter in the engine bay haven't had a problem since

Thats An Easy Fix I Had to Pull My carby Off Twice :s

Remove the fuel cut solenoid, spray a bit of carby cleaner followed by compressed air in the opening where it was, watch the pressure though so as not to damage anything.

Don't remove the rear fuel filter, you want to keep crud out of the fuel pump. Do add a second fuel filter between the fuel pump and carby though.

No I got rid of the back one and put one before the pump in the engine bay

It's fairly common to add a filter between the pump and carb, this is what I thought you had done, but removed your your rear one.

Im actually having the same problem with mine at the moment.

There are 3 wires from the carby which go to a female connection which goes to a male connection to the car.

Sorry for being so vauge but i really dont know what it is called. From what i have seen and been told they clog up and rust VERY easily.

I will be replacing mine with bullet connections but every time i use a modeling flat head and scrape out the rust and what not it works perfectly.

I had exactly this problem. Fixed it real easy, tossed the engine and fuel tank and fitted a G13bb and fuel cell

Tried everything in the book. Next is a pull down, clean and put a kit through it
