Hi All I have been following the trailer builds for several months and finally bit the bullet and built a 5x3.6 trailer with 500mm high sides and a extended pull, my main objective was to build a lightweight trailer to be pulled by my Jimny. The chassis is 40x40x2 RHS 1.6mm flat sheet for sides, ends and floor 75x50x2 and 75x50x3.2 for the A frame and A frame centre rail.

52Kg thanks to the bathroom scales I purchased a UNI Mig 180 welder to replace the Arc welder Mechanical brakes are fitted with F100 Drums, off road coupling, 5 leaf eye to eye springs (now updated to 6 leaf and rerolled to give a extra 25mm of clearance) A 53 litre water tank is fitted with a 1.6mm guard for protection, Axle location and mudguard profile is a compromise to be able to carry a 20 Litre Jerrycan on the sides

The water tank, 53 Litres was the only one suitable due to the small width of the trailer for $169 My spare wheel is fitted between the tool box and trailer (wheel 23kg) the weight of the tool box and contents varies. keeping my tow ball weight to a mininium Cleaned down and a coat of Hammertone Blue sprayed on

The trailer looks great mate. How much weight do you expect to carry in it? Only reason I ask is 6 leaf springs are normally around 1200 to 1400kg so will be really stiff with less weight then that

Thanks for your input, I used new rerolled 6 leaf springs, the 5 leaf springs were too soft even on sealed roads I had my tyres bottoming out on the mudguards. Dry Weight, 360Kg with water tank and shield, tool box, Brakes etc and spare tyre. I was in the line waiting for my turn at the weighbridge with 40+ton double Bs I hardly moved the weigh bridge compared to the Trucks. The alloy Toolbox came from Repco $157 Made a stone guard from 25 x25 RHS to bolt on Our first trip was to lake Charliegrark in SW victoria as per photos total weight loaded with all gear water and solar panel enclosure was just over 500Kg. toal cost as in photos inc rego $3600

Hi Jimny91 The awning is lowered and moved towards the centre for transport The awning support posts are 35x35 RHS. The tapered box section to which the awning is attached is hollow with cross pins fitted (one at approx mid point on the straight side and the 2nd pin is at the top on the tapered side) the top of the RHS has a slot for the pins to fit into. The awning mounts at the top are slotted to allow side movement to prevent some racking. Car Boot tie downs are fitted to each RHS to hold it in its relavant position a hole is drilled in one RHS at approx mid point. To operate, loosen both tie downs, lift the end with the hole drilled in it until the hole in the RHS is exposed and fit pin, lift the other end placing the tapered box section on top of the pin at mid point, lift the first end and also place on top of the pin at mid point, retie tiedowns, erect awning This takes less than a minute to move the awning from transport mode to erect mode. It may sound complicated but its not, will take photos and post. The awning when erected does not interfere with the tent but needs to be lifted to allow the RTT to be opened.

how do you find climbing in under the extended canopy part of the RTT with it being quite low?

when i was building mine i ended up going with the other style as i wasn't sure what the entry/exit was going to be like.

Hi All thanks for the comments. Getting into and out of the tent is easy, we relocated the tiedown points on the extended canopy to a higher position, allowing us to lift the canopy to get axcess the ladder, this way it gives us privacy. I mounted the RTT up 300mm from the trailer when I first built it, then lowered it to reduce wind resistance and making it easy for the better half to get up and down. The little zoot averaged 24.81MPG ( 11.387 Lit per 100Klm) at 90-95K/Hr 37c temp with the aircon on 2up, loaded at the weekend with the trailer, the first real test. Running around it averages 35MPG. Pezz, Welcome to the wimmera I live 16ks out of Horsham, there are 2 white Jimnys around town, mine does not have roof racks. love to catch up when you get settled.

My tailgate kitchen frame is 25x25x1.6 RHS the plastic draws are from kmart, the slide out food draw is from the reject shop we used these as the are smaller than the Oates version The top,sides etc are colourbond sheeting pop riveted on. The end has a swing out bracket to hold the foldover table extension, the bracket is held in the folded position with a magnet. 2 skate board wheel2 are used to support the kitchen when closed, the draws are held in position with velcro. A stretch strap holds the draws closed for transport. My aim was to keep weight to a minium.
