After a short drive down a windy mountain path stuck behind a Grandma who obviously knew how to drive in a straight line but would Slam the brakes on to take the corners..
The XL-7's Front Brakes developed a rather bad shake in them under application..

This has lead me to believe that the rotors are now warped..
This is NOT covered by the Warranty that I bought the car with as they consider disc rotors and pads as wear and tear...

So what do you think I am going to be up for to replace the Discs and pads ??

You might be able to get them machined if they are still thick enough. This is usually pretty cheap if you take the rotors off and run them down to your local brake shop. They'll be able to tell you to machine or replace.

Might get them looked at by the guys fitting the front bar then...Since they do Brakes and all that crap....

$90 for rotors
less than $90 for pads

Its gotta be $60 for a machine these days, in my experience once a rotor warps it keep warping

Once you fix your brakes try using the two second rule while driving, your brakes will last much longer and you will have less chance of plowing into someone. Not having a go but it just amazes me how close to each other you sourtherners drive.

Oh it wasn't like I was up her butt... Its just on the Macquarie pass, She would do the limit, then about 20 metres before the corner just slam on the brakes as if to pause for a photo opp..

I left a good 3 full car lengths between me and her for safety but she would just nearly slow to a complete stop to take the corners...

(And I don't mean 3 Smart car car lengths.... more like a stretched limo or two)

Mine does that from time to time, can also be build up of brake dust between the pads and disk, and the pads also glaze over, get a can of Brake cleaner, Super cheap had the bendix stuff quite cheap, youll be surprised how much better the XL7 brakes after spraying your disks etc with this stuff, i usually give it a quick spray every two weeks.

Also if disks are warn/warped just replace the disks, RDA ones as Royce said are only around $90 and pads around $75
From memory Disks only last for two sets of Pads, whether thats true or not i dont know as on my second set now with newish rotors and they seem fine.

I recommend the new repco Thermo quite 4x4 Pads, there a ceramic compound, it stops quite well now and dont over heat or fade as quickly and front wheels are actually staying clean.

I've not had any good experience with Thermo Quiets. They squeal, wear out quick and give off loads of black dust. And I've fitted them to a number of different vehicles (not by choice)

Really, I haven't had any issues with them, Used bendix 4x4 before which would of been worn out by now and wheels would be black after a week, so far done just over 20,000k with them and just under half warn. And def no black dust, only a bit of grey dust, being ceramic. Pads are a silver / dark grey in color. And they have never made any noise.

So far they have been the best pad i have had.

Got sick and tired of replacing pads every 20,000k with Bendix and so forth and they also had poor brake performance.

What would you recommenced then?

I'm a fan of QFM pads, but they're hard to come by. I agree with your thoughts on Bendix. If you're having a good run with Thermo Quiets then good for you, I haven't had much luck with them but it probably comes down to the vehicles they're fitted to and their use

Mate I have been there before, 2 options.

1(Idon't recomend) Overtake dangerously on a blind corner... depress the horn and flick the bird on the way past (Again I don't recomend)

2 Once you realise what you following..,. slow down "heaps" using gears and look for somewhere to pull in for a break... enjoy said break for a good 10min - stretch your legs - 2 ciggys etc.

If discs are warped shame on you, replace dont skim. You may as well do pads at the same time (good for what? 50thou k's?)

Discs and pads DIY est is 250...

Turns out the Brakes on an XL-7 were prone to warping.. many actually suffering from total failure.
So yeah replacing the Discs and pads is advised..
I have had it less then 2 weeks and have gone down the pass 4 times..
So yeah... Looks like I will be replacing them... the drums on the back seem fine.. Handbrake works real well..

I replaced my rear shoes at 180,000 k not because they where worn but damaged.from wheel falling off reacon would.of.last 200,000,

They are different pads now. They used to be made by ferodo. Now made by federal mogul labelled repco.

We sell thousands and never have any problems.

I am a fan of getting pads from a wrecker, cause then you get them really cheap

I buy my QFM pads through GSL rally sport.

Greg is great to deal with, and his prices are always the cheapest.

last time i had a shake / pulse in the front brakes in the falcon i was told pads and disks i replaced pads and all was good
i will very soon replace the pads in the GV for the same reason disks look fine
might pay to have a look before you open your wallet

Got a email yesterday from GSL about QFM pads, will give them a shot next time, im not a fan of drilled rotors on 4x4's, whats the thoughts on Dimpled/sloted rotors? Would be less of a chance of rotors getting fractures from over heating and rapid cooling when going through water etc.

Whats the life expectancy on slotted over standard for pads? My thoughts on slotted is there only good for if doing alot of hard braking, in 4x4 it would be good to keep the pad surface clean, but at times you do have to have foot slightly on the brake to control speed on very steep descents

Not really worth it, cost alot more for not much benefit. I looked at them but they would be a special order, they dont have any brands with slotted instock from when i looked.

New normal rotors are cheap you might aswell replace them evry couple of years.

i run slotted rotors for mad E-reps & +'ve street cred. my imagination noticed a mild bit of increased breaking ability. 8)

New pads don't cost that much you need to buy them 2nd hand - unless your skint and then its still bad economics. "Cross drilled, slotted, whatever" - Just no, things like this are sweet on a street car but it all collects grit and sand to be released back onto the pads etc with a little water. If your factory stuff gets a bit lean with big rubber then someone else will have upgraded the brakes and you can copy...
