well i'm not on this forum to often enough these past years to keep track of trends but with the G16 now being common and affordable its no one believes in going any other route.

Still in a few years time the balenos will probably dry up and m13 jimny geaboxes would probably be more common.
So i'm thinking the m13, m15, m16 and m18 will be the next generation of ooomph for the Sj's (and possibly vits?)

Just curious how interchangeble are the g13bb and m13 gearboxes mounting etc

A j series and auto would be my pick over a m series

For all the effort of fitting an M series to s sierra, you may aswell fit a J24B :wink:

And all roads lead back to the gearbox, which is the case with every sierra conversion.

Yes, you can swap a sierra tailshaft housing onto a Jimny manual to run an M motor in a sierra. That's assuming the Jimny manual doesn't have a 1.1 5th gear (they do, don't they?) because that's going to cause havoc with road gearing. It also means you need a jimny manual and a 1.3 sierra manual to swap a non-jimny M motor into a sierra. That's going to get expensive.

Jimny auto's are tiny and weak so they're not really an ideal swap candidate.

So, unless someone makes an M to G16 adapter so we could run, say, an M18 in front of a Trimatic, vitara manual or AW-4 (and then figures out a patch loom to shift the AW-4) then I don't think the M is that attractive for a sierra owner - better to skip to the J series, even though that has its own issues.

I think as good Sierras become harder and harder to find and the prices of Jimnys drop there will be more M15 and M18 powered Jimnys taking over the weekend wheeler, road driven mildly modified section that's usually been G16b powered lifted and locked Sierras

I agree royce, which is going to push parts development towards the jimny parts that are made of glass.

I think M to AW4 would be a great seller!

I agree. An M18 would be pretty sweet in Hedgepig, so long as the shifting could be resolved.

The j24 in my GV has a 4 speed box. Will have a look and see if it looks the same as the aw4 in my Sierra.

All interesting, i just thought the M series was available in a lot more cars than the J ??? Feasibility of these things usually depends on supply of wrecked cars

Yes, that's true, but the only North/South application for the M is in the Jimny, so sump/accessory drive/manifolds and RWD gearbox only has one source - that's the limiting factor. That's why it's often preferable to start with a performance motor as a donor because lots of people have put them into lots of things before - Take the Mazda BP motor as an example. It's been used in freakin' everything from a van to an MX-5 to a Familia GT-R. It also can be bolted to an AW-4 by using an auto MX-5 bellhousing.

There's you engine donor, not a immobilised/VVT front wheel drive motor that's impossible to get bits for. I agree the M18 numbers are impressive, but they're going to be a very complex swap into a sierra unless you have the complete loom/dash/key etc from the donor car.

I would think anyone capable of the fabrication to drop that combination into something and get all the wiring and plumbing working the actual mating of the 2 would be an afternoons work.

every second jimny owner isnt going to want to do that conversion, I think there might be 10 people would genuinely do that conversion ever

People put G16s into Sierras because it's an easy conversion. People put M1Xs into Jimnys because it's easy, they don't do it because the Ms are a good motor.

Pretty much no one put G16s into ljs even though everyone has been sticking them in sierras for the last 20 years. It's to difficult to put a G16 into an Lj, they need a lot of the same mods you'd need to put an M into a Sierra.

Sierras are dying out pretty quickly and the Jimnys are taking over as the aftermarket catches up and their prices come down. Give it a few years and Sierras will be like Ljs. Only mild builds or all out machines.

Either way, J20s seem to be the flavour of the month for Sierras. Cheaper and easier than an M motor with better results.

They did an m15 into a coily bodied leafy, which included bolting in the radiator and the radiator crossmember of a jimny... i believe the m15 came out of a cruze???

If i recall correctly, it runs a jimny manual box, and there was some trickery with the jackshaft etc for the sierra tcase - but it was all bolt on using sierra and jimny parts and kept the gear sticks in the same place.
