Hello all,

I have a bit of a question in regards to my noisy front diff in my little Drover.

I have only driven maybe 200km in my little drover.

I have discovered what sounds like your typical noisy 30yr old diff, which in previous experiences on old corollas is either noisy carrier bearings or noisy gearsets. the sort of constant whiring verging on grinding sort of noise.

It is only there slightly at 60-70km. but jump up to 90-100km. and you really start to hear it.

Just then i jacked up both front wheels and did the ol push and pull on the top/bottom of the wheel to check the wheel bearings, seem alright to me. and slight swerving (ie loading and unloading each front wheel) doesn't change the noise, which points me away from the wheel bearings as being the issue.

I recently rebuilt the swivel joints/CV joints, and all seemed in order. The hubs lock fine and drive the front wheels. brakes work no dramas, and pushing the brakes doesn't appear to change the noise.

My question is, when the hubs aren't locked, and the transfer case is in 2wd. Does the front diff insides (carrier, gearset) spin at all?

Fairly stupid question perhaps but what else could make the noise if my wheel bearings are in good order?

Unless its not in the front diff, but it certainly sounds like it is.

Any suggestions welcome!

No. It won't be spinning.

I'd be looking at the transfer case, gearbox, and driveshaft unis also.

Only if a free wheel hub is seized on can the front diff turn.

My Sierra made a noise at speed in 2wd that was the front tailshaft spline vibrating.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

yer this seems to make noise in 2wd, i haven't taken it offnroad yet so i haven't tested the 4wd properly. Mechanically it does what it is supposed to as far as i can tell.

Uni joints look a little oily in the rear shaft, so i might check them out.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I will look into the input bearing.

The reason i suspect front diff is that i replaced the diff oil yesterday in the front diff, and rather than there being a bit of water in my diff oil, it was more a case of there was a little bit of oil in my diff water....though admitedly the new diff oil didnt really have any effect on the noise at all.

Perhaps the transfer and gbox oil is the same!

I'm going to change the transfer case oil and gbox oil hopefully this weekend. So perhaps i will find that at least the noise changes so i can help identify it.

Need to add diff breathers, transfer and box breathers, this helps keep water out

So more experimentation was done,

The noise doesnt seem to change on the gear you are in, the load on the gearbox, the load on the transfer case. doesnt matter if your flooring it or just coasting along in neutral, no change in noise at all.

So its definately associated with wheel speed only.

which points us to front wheel beraings (checked to be ok), shaft between gbox and transfer case, rear output shaft of transfer case to rear diff, rear diff carrier gears, rear wheel bearings....

And im fairly confident it is towards the front of the car or at least in the middle, so i think that rules out the rear diff.

hmmmm bit of a list of things to check there, i'd better get on it!

Can someone please confirm which Transfer case i can buy that will be a direct replacement for this transfer case?

From my research it seems that as long as its got the same flanges as mine, and it has a handbrake on it. then its the same as mine.

Dave, anything leaf sprung that isn't a 1 Litre will work (roughly 1984-1995), you may just have to put your flanges on it if its a Wide track (some early Wide tracks had Narrow track flanges though...).
If you don't want to stuff around with the flanges, you need a 1.3L Narrow Track (roughly 1984-1988, and yes with handbrake drum).
