hey guys,

my starter motor on my sierra (g13ba) is on its last legs, i am currently coaxing it to work each time i start the car with some physical enaouragement (read -bashing it with a tire iron)

where is the best place i can get a replacement? wreckers? who is best to go to?

or just go to your local auto elecy or wreckers, apparently mitsu's use the same.

One thing that I have noticed is that there's 2-3 different types of starter motors, Turned out, and very lucky for me it was the same as my Vitara.

Pendign the price of a new one You could get yours reconditioned by a auto electrician.

Not much in them that goes wrong, brushes and bearings and off you go again.

Before you go out and buy a new one. Either make or buy a starter relay. Can be made up with a relay and some quality auto wire and a few insulated crimps. Took me 30mins. That way if its still buggered, your new starter will work 100% all the time lol

yeah as above, just replaced mine but even after replacing it with a new one it needed a relay fitted to make it work properly. after new starter and a relay, she's all good and starts first go and easy as

Pull apart, clean it out and see how it goes. Most likely just full of crap and sticky

oh and i bought my new one from Veales. two different types/sizes available though so be careful. turned out mine was for a Drover and had the smaller nose lenght and smaller flange diameter.

part numbers are:
Drover type: STR1043A ( with my trade discount cost me $93 )
Sierra type: STR1119A. ( with my trade discount would have cost me $120 )

quite reasonable prices too as above.... well i think they are reasonable

Search for clicky starter. Made a big difference for me.

Either look for sheps clicky starter fix. This will show you how to make one but don't be as dodgy lol. Or you can purchase one off Royce from the business section.

get a 4 pin spotlight type relay from any auto store and wire it up yourself, took me half an hour to do.

pin # 86 is starter motor solenoid wire ( the original wire that would normally go to the starter solenoid )
pin # 85 is 12v -ve ( negative on battery or chassis ground )
pin # 30 is 12v +ve ( positive on battery )
pin # 87 is to starter motor solenoid
