hey people! as the title says.. im thinking of putting a 1L transfer behind my vitara gearbox.. i know im gonna have to make up mounts obviously just want to know how you guys have done them in your sierras etc like how to connect it to the gearbox via jack shaft? i want to put it in my vitara coz the gears are cheaper to buy and they lower my 2wd to tow the camper with 31's on my car.. also im not sure if it will line up with my diff? i could just mover the transfer case to the side? any help would be cool cheers.

You will have to do something with your rear diff, Sierras have a offset pumpkin and girl cars don't

would a pair of ruddy great CV's in place of uni joints solve the problem?
(dunno if its even practical in this particular case)

can you get gears for a lj case? or maybe they might be too weak for the Vitara?

The transfer may last, but even if that is the case, there is so much wrong with it as an option..... lol. OK, problem with a clocked Sierra transfer (to vertical) would be it still won't line up with your front diff. So you really need transfer with a centered rear output and a right hand drop front output. I don't know of any off hand that have high range reduction..... Or you go with a transfer that has both outputs offset, such as the Sierra, however then I reckon you'd want to do a arse end swap to a diff with an offset centre. Off the top of my head you have: Sierra is probably going to be too narrow. Bundera is a tad narrow though probably close to on the money (wrong stud pattern though). Land Cruiser have a heap of width options (most offset), though still wrong stud pattern and notable clearance loss). Insert MQ troll here too. Land Rover will be too wide. If it wasn't road driven you could probably go with a compromised option, but I reckon I'd be unhappy with a road driven car with massive tailshaft angles!

mate, if you have a goood search its been talking about it bit. i was considering doing it on mine. the easy bit getting drive from the box, as a sierra jack shaft will bolt up directly to the manual box. the angle from the case to the diffs isnt to bad, a lot of guys in the usa have done this with out issues. with the mounts you need to sort out some how of doing it without disturbing the fuel lines and other lines that run allow the chassis rail. You obviously need to get custom shaft made up to.
You may or may not have to massage the tunnel but it depends on how high you mount it, if the original sierra jack shaft is used them im pretty sure the stick will come through the standard case hole in the floor.
if your after more info, jump on a american site and have a look. they talk about it like we talk about putting 31's on ahah. or just ask

X2. The auto relies on the front input bearing in the t-fer to support the rear of the gearbox main shaft. The manual has a rear mainshaft bearing, and does not require another bearing housing to be fitted.

tonka_tuff wrote: can you get gears for a lj case? or maybe they might be too weak for the Vitara? No you can't, though factory 3:1 low on the LJ50 case is nice. More or less, there are no aftermarket parts available for LJs. The only stuff that exists can also be used on Sierras. I was joking BTW, whilst they do have centered outputs I wouldn't trust one behind all that torque. They make Sierra t-cases look huge. Also the flanges are 1l sized so are a pain to sort out for Vit use.

Someone has to - we all keep looking at it and none of us follows through with actually buying it!
Depends on the balance of your priorities - costs more than a set of gears for the Vit case (remembering both drive shafts also need to be modded) but drops your high range as well. Which is more important?

Off set rear out put will not be any worse then a vit tc The sierra out put might be to the right but its a lot lower The vit one comes out the top of the case and has to come down along way

on this, does anyone know how long coily axle shafts are?
im sure if you could get the right length axles.
it wouldnt be hard. even full floating the rear and making it offset would make gearing awesome

My impression is that if done right, the angle of the driveshaft isn't that bad. well not bad enough for vibrations?
