Hey guys just brought a uniden uh7700 nb uhf radio for my 08 jimny, and this is the wire cable that came with it to connect to battery.



Whats the best way to connect these to the battery terminals? or if not the battery terminals i hear some people connect it to the cig lighter 12v, but does this render the cig lighter plug useless? because i use it to charge various gadgets.

Bit of a rookie question, i know, but couldn't find any real good guides.

So long as you connect positives together (red to red) and ground together (black to black, or in your case red with black stripe) it won't render anything useless. It's called connecting in parallel. Just splice into the cable, or cut and resolder/crimp.

Looks like it has a 3amp fuse on it, so it wont draw too much load, and should be fine with the other gadgets charging too.

I connected mine to the wiring loom going into the stereo. But the 12v cig lighter will be easier for you to identify the cables, positive (e.g red, but wire may not be that colour) is in the centre, ground connects to the cylindrical sheath

Also, buy a multimeter. I think you can get them for 10 bucks nowadays and you will be sure of the proper wire to plug to

It's easy enough to do.. Your only drama would be if your connecting something in that pulls a fair current, if youve got too much drathwing from the one supply the fuses will blow. However UHF doesn't draw alot so it's not generally a problem. Plus the UHF will switch off when you turn e car off.

Having said that, some guys will suggest you connect it straight to the battery as the power supply to the UHF can be a bit more stable that way (or something like that). Just remember to turn it off when you park the car up. It doesn't draw heaps of power but best not to run more of the battery than you need to while the car isn't running.

If you decide to connect it straight to the battery, you just need a couple of round connectors from any electronics place. Black can go to any well earthed bolt really, positive to the positive terminal of the battery. If your going to wire in lots of accessories, you may want to look into a fuse block.

There's heaps of guys on here that are way more knowledgeable than me, so heed ere advise over mine quick disclaimer

No doubt there is polarity protection inside the unit anyway, so if you were to put it around the wrong way its probably protect.

(note this is not an invitation to try it!)

I would splice into the ignition +12V of the cigarette lighter, but definately give it its own ground (ie find a bolt in the chassis, use a ring connecter and put it on it). It will most likely work if you just ground it through the cigarette lighter, but with things that make noise or use signals i like to give it a decent ground.

I have found wiring it directly to the battery is handy when camping as you can leave it on without having to leave the keys in the car.
This is even more handy when camping with a group as you use the radio much more then.

if your really tricky you can wire the uhf to both ignition switched power for everyday use and a separate switched line to run directly to the battery for those times like i explained above. haha probably more effort then it's worth though

I agree with Benz. I wired mine initially to the accessories line and after a few club trips now have it wired permanently to power. I would turn the car off and then forget to turn the radio back on. Not like the old days when they did not tun off until you turned the switch.

i decided to parallel connect it with the 12v cigarette lighter.

Problem is every time i turn the ignition on it cooks the 3A fuze in the back of the uniden wire.

Is this fuze pointless? should i just cut it out?

you've got the polarity back to front, remove that fuse you'll burn the set out next

I dont want to sound mean but if you dont know what you are doing it might pay to leave this one to the experts, you are already real close to wrecking the unit and I am going to assume you dont know about running the antenna lead and terminating the end on it

yeah all good, must have mixed the polarity up at some stage when i was extending the 12v length. then when i went to wire up the rest, ended up backwards.
I was confused about the fuze because i was certain the pos and neg were the right way around haha.
