Hey Everyone i was just wondering what mods i should do for a stock 97 coily engine, so i can run 31'' tyres on it. Im trying to keep the stock engine as i am still in school and it is hard to save whilst studying. one of my mates was telling me to get a new carby the 32/36 one? should that do it?
open to any suggestions thanks guys

Leave the engine alone, and fit a wide track sierra transfer case with a set of 4.9 or 6.5 reduction gears.
Power is not going to help you when your gearing is so far out.

Agreed. Gearing is the answer.

Power is not going to help you when your gearing is so far out. I understand why the gearing is important but why fit a new transfer case? Can you not put new gears in the Coily transfer case (and to do it right do you need to change all the gearing in the transfer and diffs?)? I also am looking at doing this... I have 235s on now but find that going up slopes in first as well as normal street driving between 3rd and 4th isn't the greatest with the stock gearing. I imagine 31's would make the problems even more pronounced. My zuk is my daily driver but due to the roads here (and the crazy traffic) I rarely get up to 60km/hr let alone 80 or 100.... so I won't be sacrificing too much going to the custom gearing. Sorry for the hijack OP....

James,
The coily transfer is chain driven. There are NO aftermarket gearing options for this case. A WT sierra case literally bolts in, and you then have a full range of gearing options to choose from.
Also, you have no way to alter diff gears in a coily, as the High Pinion front diff means that no other sierra or vitara CW&P will fit.
Transfer is your only choice!

I'm beginning to see the light... guess I'll save a bit and fix up the Sami instead... and try some 215's on the coily...

I believe so but you would be surprised at some of the things they do to vehicles here so I am very leery about buying any used stuff here (costs almost the same as importing it anyway)... but the more I think about it the more it seems I should keep the coily close to stock and let the Sami do the heavy lifting as it is pretty beat up anyway. I can take the coily on easier treks to the waterfalls and such without much worry. So much is missing or broken on the Sami (combined with the fact that all the stock stuff works on the coily) it just makes sense to turn that into the rig to do the more serious stuff... got loads of reading to do though to figure out what exactly I'm going to do to the Sami.... going to need to rebuild or change out everything from the transfer case to the wheels and probably do a RUF( the engine is pretty well sorted... ) I've already started tearing it down to get a look at the body and frame... hoping that once it is all in pieces spread the wife will be more amenable to me buying the parts I need to get it back together and out in the mud
