Has anyone been successful in sapping the belts without removing radiator and crap? or is the resistance futile?

Yep I done it, it's a tight squeeze but I got my fat hands in there

easily doable. It helps to lift out the overflow bottle.

Fat hands are not usually the problem.. Its the fat head that makes these simple jobs difficult.
