Hi guys.

I have an idiotic plan i want to atach some sort of lever to each sides cable of my hand barnk with two seperate levers for left and right.

So i want to idividual be able to brake my left rear tire aswell as to individual brake my right hand rear tire without to compromize my current hamdbrake in place.

Do you guys think this can work?

Then i can applly the bracking to the wheel that is spinning so that torque can be applied to the weel that is standing still?

I know this sounds crazy?

But is it crazy enough to work?

Thank you

:)

Happy Zooking :)

The system you're referring to is known as fiddle brakes or cutting brakes and yes, it works well providing the brake is strong enough. With small tyres you'd get away with using the stock hand brake system on most cars. You can buy hydraulic cutting brake kits for 4WDs.

Practically every tractor has them, pretty useful on older/lower spec'd ones that don't have lockers.

There is a far easier system that will take the strain off the driver having to think etc.........called a real diff lock.

If you were to do it well, you'd use a hydraulic cutting brake. But by the time you sort that out you could have spent the money on an auto locker.. Or on your way to an air locker.

I think this is a great option for extra traction and is something I've often considered trying. VW off road buggies have used this concept for a long time, both cable and hydraulic.

You would need to be a hands on sort of driver though. It falls into a similar argument as the 2wd low mod.

Similar in that some people totally see the purpose and some totally don't and the discussion will just go back and forth much like we are already ;)

altugh an auto diff lock would be a good option if u can do it yourself, but the project seems awesome and fun to do.

I dont know how you see it and how everyone sees it either, but imo this falls into a different category of diff locks.... as this system would be seem as a "recovery" system, where he get stuck, apply the hand brake and off he goes... instead of a "preventive" system of a diff locker, where he would be able to drive it from the beginning.....(it would be pretty hard to apply the brakes on and off manually and accordingly of the terrain as you re driving it in real time)

so end result both different driving styles and approaches to an obstacle

I donno, I might be wrong but that was my impression :)

First attempt you flex up and loose traction on the drooping rear wheel. Second attempt you know to pull that lever just as you start to Lose traction.

As you say Bert it would be fun to give it a go.

Then you need a bit more speed so you have to change gears and then you have to steer hard into a rut which requires both hands on the wheel and you soon run out of hands

Lockers:1

if youre insistant. Look at the CNC brand cutting brake levers a better version of your idea.

I believe he was making a realistic scenario.
Not just flexing up.

I believe that if he would be into hardcore stuff he would already have a locker or be talking about one instead of this

I think the only relevant use for fiddle brakes is for competition, either trials, where they can improve turning performance, or in classes where diff locks are forbidden.

They do work, but they require a lot of driver skill to be effective. I vote not worth the effort. Get a diff lock. Much more effective and no special skills required.

Seems electronic traction control doesnt work with an ECU and a bunch of sensors doing the same thing to all 4 wheels, you can do it to 2 wheels only and will need outside assistance to work out which wheel and then try and apply it at the right time whilst working all the other controls

I vote for just going out and learning how to drive what youve got already

Meh ignore the pesimists. Give it a go eh.

Even if it costs you a bit, the academic excercise in getting it to work would be pretty enjoyable i would think.

I like the look of that dual level dual piston arrangement above. Would you ever want to lock both wheels at same time?

As what about if you got 2 master cylindres, mounted them facing each other, and used 1 lever to control both of them? push it one way and it locks the left wheel, push it the other way and it locks the other way. might have to think up somethign tricky so that you dont pull them too far in the wrong direction (ie pulling the piston out of the bore)

If you are running rear disc brakes, you could attach another caliper to each rear disc purely for this contraption. they do this kind of thing all the time on the drift cars for their hydraulic handbrakes, so they are seperate from the normal brakes.

Give it a go like a Z9?

The levers can be setup for forward and back, and are often done so.
