Lol the Jimny rocks! And the pootrol my brother owns has NO lockers, hopefully with double locked jimny it just may do some sections a little easier than momentum styled thrash and bash method. The driving style I prefer is super slow crawl over anything rather than rev her up and let her rip type self destruct mode, I have worked on both my zooks enough now to know that they get massive damage if care is not taken. Can't wait to get it back from sparkies and get it into gearbox shop! I have looked at offroad armoury for a few bits to try beef up diffs a little better and came across their 4" jimny comp spec lift kit, now I have just fitted new JB 3" lift but I was wondering if the rear shock upper mount from ORA would work with the JB kit? Any benefits?

Driving your Jimmy with 31 like a grandma, you will still break shit, I slowly reversed out of a mud hole on Saturday and did this to my CV. I'm only on 30's

I'm guessing it had a crack in it because it cracked way to easy. Josh is only on 235 and he's always breaking CV.

Same size CV as in a 1 litre as I understand it. I was able to break them on 30s with stock 56:1 low first with a 2 stroke motor. Now I have cromo CVs, 26 spline axles (made of 4140) and 121:1 low first. Even if I drive like a 'tard on 235/85 s CVs etc don't break, only 26 spline rear axles.

Good reply Dazza
I think the best thing for you to do given your current car is to learn (to the i and t here) exactly how to OUTDRIVE the patrol, rather than trying to impress everyone with the list of mods that can't be put to proper use with a numbskull driver (not at all having a go here mate, rather pointing out that there are drivers out there with an arm-long list and still can't keep with a well driven car).
Just look at your list again and see what will give you the best and biggest advantage/edge offroad and try to narrow it down a little. I NEVER take a frypan camping because a well washed shovel can cook bacon and eggs just fine thanks! See my point here? Look at the early explorers of this country, they only had stock standard Land Rover series 1's, Dodge Powerwagons and FJ toyotas. Guess what, none of them had locking diffs, huge flexible suspension or really powerful engines (i know, suzuki's don't have them either) but the point is that a really well driven 4X4 will go into some horrible places with nothing more than a very smart and game driver.
I learnt my offroad driving in the vic high country (Wahalla, Dargo and Omeo regions mainly) and two techniques that my dad educated me on was: 1 - try driving a really nasty track in low range with the hubs unlocked and see how far you get. If you get stuck , stop and observe why. (try to keep all 4 wheels within the travel of the shocks for example). Then have another go on a slighty different line and see where that gets you. Then IF you need to, lock in the hubs and just see the massive difference it can make!
2 - If your driving down a bad track and suddenly you lift opposing wheels, don't try and give it more power here because if the car suddenly gets some traction and moves forward, the huge wheelspin already generated by someones heavy foot will most likely snap a cv when the spinning wheel gets a bootload of traction and wants to stop in a bloody big hurry. When the "differential"effect happens, drop the revs heaps and introduce some left-foot braking. When the engines looses a few revs, gently give it some more power and some more brakes (this effect will try to lock the axle, immitating traction control/diff locks somewhat). Yet again, the difference is huge. Just do a youtube search to see what i mean here.
In my 2010 auto jimny with nothing but 215/75R15 General Grabber AT2's, 40mm OME lift and the swaybar removed, i can get up tracks here in brissy that a local double diff locked, 5 inch lifted GQ running 35's can't, all because the DRIVER, not the CAR, is what makes it all happen, not really anything to do with the mods either by the way.
Think about the "packing for a camping trip" scenario again. Why Take a "wine cooler"when your already taking the engel??
Just look at YOUR list for YOUR car again and make YOUR own decision here. Everyone of these negative comments come from someone who "may have" heard about things from a forum, mate, dvd, 4X4 "expert"at the local autobarn store for fuck sake. There are also plenty of people out there who have a THEORY on things but have never given it a proper educated decision based on experience too.
Just my two cents.....
Terry

I think your doing a great thing, and your right about the haters, if your not being helpful don't bother.
I think the Air lockers will be the most valuable piece in the puzzle, even if you don't have the flex or the tyres of the big boys it doesn't matter because your light and small, and with lockers you can drive up and over anything its that simple, even if you loose 1 or 2 tyres to air it wont matter cause they'll still push you through.
I was out on the weekend with a patrol and cruiser with 33's and Lifts and kept up with them the whole time, I only lost out when i got Flexed out front and back and couldn't keep traction, lockers would have fixed that for me, oh well there on my wish list now too.
The main problem i have other then that is POWER! which is why i'm doing an engine conversion next and going to a 1.5 or 1.8, not really for the 4x4 factor, more for the drive-ability in particular on the highway, cant even keep 100kph with 30's up a slight incline.
Also if you drive this car a lot I would definitely recommend the JB's castor corrected arms, i'm running about a 4" lift and it did drive horrible due to the -4 Deg castor the lift created, after putting in the new arms its back to driving like a standard jimny and made steering a lot better as well.
Either way good luck with the project, sounds like your headed in the right direction to me

I fitted the transfer case on the weekend that had my 24% trialjimny gears put in it (BIG thank you to 31zook Josh for fitting the gears!) and WOW is all I can say! The gears make a MASSIVE improvement with drivability on the 31" bighorns! Small inclines on the F3 used to see me dropping back gears like a road train but now it's 5th all the way.... And does it easy! I WAS thinking engine upgrade for next step, but honestly it's more like I will deal with it when it dies now. Also fitted 2" body lift to deal with tyre rubbing on headlight bucket and in preparation for 33" bighorns, swivel hub kit which fixed the leaks and dramatically improved ease of steering( non power steer), front wheel bearings, new RDA rotors and pads, new rear brake pads, rear diff seal, new Exedy extreme clutch.... Was a huge weekend! But the gains were well worth it! I also must mention that I have already fitted the JB caster corrected radius arms and new bushes front and rear, adjustable shocks, rear shock repositioners, armour etc etc. don't think I will go lockers for now as I am talking to some guts about fitting hilux diffs front and rear and 4 link setup etc so just will wait and save a bit as I don't want to do it twice. Car goes into shop on Wednesday for full exhaust 2" which maybe a bit of overkill but will flow ok later when I do get around to power upgrade. I also spoke a little with 31zook on suspension setup after seeing his awesome 3 link setup and I think I have a LOT to learn so will be researching a lot before deciding and wasting coin on the wrong thing. Hope this does inspire a few guys to build their Jimnies to the best they can and if anyone has any questions and wants a no bullshit straight answer on any of the mods I have done feel free to ask.

4 pages and no photos of the old girl... It's kinda wird reading the thread of the car you have brought And incase anyone is woundering the cvs are still going strong, only things I have broken/replaced are - cam sensor (not needed was a simple relay...) - coil packs (heaps better fuel economy now) - I have half ripped off the FL quarter panel (disagreement with a tree on its current upright state) - ripped the axle mount of the FR shock ( I'm thinking it was when I went full flex in that huge rut in 1st photo) - found a hole in the radiator today ( thermo fan rubbing against radiator) All in all I love it and so far have pulled out a hilux ( in the photos above) and kept up with a twin locked TD 80 series cruiser I use it as my DD and have my 9 month old daughter in with me and feel safe Even let the other half have a drive and as much as she hated it she couldn't get it bogged lol I would suggest a jimny to someone over a sierra if they want to use it for more then just a weekend warrior and if you are having more then 2 People in the car or with kids because of the aircon

I think coffs might be a steep learning curve Sam. And your CVs will stay together along as you don't lock the front end Only a few days to go

Mate, I just read the whole thing a and im not hating I'm just trying to reiterate what some others have said.
The best thing that makes one car go further then the other is the driver and the drivers skills every car has to take a slightly different line and approach. Even the same car doing the same obstacle will have a slightly different line due to the fact that rocks may move ruts get deeper sands gets softer etc. a jimmy or any sort of 4x4 will only get as far as the driver drives it to its/his/her ability.
Saying that what you have now minus the excess weight plus, twin locked and gearing will get you far enough for most situations. I say this coming from a lot of experience in the field I've chosen as a career.
If you do brake things and you will, its eventually going to happen you need to replace them with upgraded items. Mr Suzuki never intended his vehicle to go to some of the places we take it neither did mr Nissan or Toyota.
Hope this helps and good luck with your build.
Don't stop doing something that makes you happy.

I'm leaving it as is, hasn't let me down yet and is great fun and in that photo it was steep last little bit was near vertical, the one good thing about the floods is that they make fun play grounds, that little step up I finally got up it just had to hit it with more speed
