i would go a 3sge beams motor
i run a 3sgte in my corolla, they are an amazing series of motor.

I've looked at the beams too. But its a HEAVY motor.

Gearbox of choice for RWD applications is the W58 with a 3Y bellhousing. Not sure what arrangements of parts are needed with clutch and flywheel, but the Y series bellhousing will place the starter on the drivers side.

I believe that the 1S and 2S bellhousings will fit straight up.

Apparently the S bell will fit a W55 gearbox, and a T50.

X2.

Only reason I am looking is for a future project. Looking for a highly strung small jap motor that has, or can be quad throttle bodied, with big trumpets

Why wouldnt you just use the 6 speed box that comes with beams motor?

the beams 3sge has been put into a number of ke70s and ae86s around the place, not much too it once you get it mounted. though i belive they have a funky flywheel (dual mass?), and if i recall correctly it seems to be the thing to swap that out for a standard "normal" flywheel.

how cool is this

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/tewantin ... 1017561859

that 3sge only came in FWD (celicas), but with the right bits its RWD quite nicely.

If a j20 fits then may as well fit a j24. All alloy, all Suzuki, some great gearboxes available and plenty of power.

122kw @6000 rpm
225nm @4000 rpm

how long is the 6 speed, would it work with a transfer case in a SWB & still have some sort of reasonable tailshaft angle etc.

Interested in any 3S gearbox options, including tough autos.
I've got a spare built st205 3sgte sitting around.

The gen 3 3sgte that i used from an st205 had to be swapped from ew to ns layout. I used a beams sump and custom mounts etc. The 6 speed has a very slow taper on the bell that makes firewall clearance an issue in some conversions. The 3/4y bell puts the starter on the drivers side but needs one mounting hole moved. And a 20v 4age starter slightly modified which is what i have done to avoid having my starter near the exhaust housing of the turbo which would kill it. The 2s bell is common as and bolts straight up to any w box not just 55 but 56/7/8 not the t50 as someone mentioned which is roughly the same price, less availability and significantly weaker and less choice of ratios.

Beams will require after market engine management which can be done for less than 1k easily. My friends have used the adaptronic. I run oem management on my 3s because i spent the time eliminating engine immobiliser and aircon stuff etc. Also the beams has a complicated variable valve setup with over 50 degrees of advance. I have seen some make over 200rwkw with just a tune and exhaust and trumpets. They arent that heavy.
I run an os giken clutch kit for an altezza which eliminates the ghey dual mass fly setup and comes with a spigot bearing to suit w box conversion. Also with beams you wont have dramas with water lines etc which i had to put a fair bit of work into on the fwd style 3s's.

Could cut a few corners and go sr20 but ewwww nissan

Sorry if this doesnt answer all questions or make much sense i am on my phone.

well i found out today first hand what the g16b are like, had a small crack just above the starter motor, i put a bottle of chemiweld in and it blocked it up, for how long is anyones guess

in regards to reliability which would be the "easier install" option been that the zook i have uses the vitara 5spd, g13b or j20a

will a g13b bolt up to the vitara box or will i have to use a different gearbox?

what would be required to fit a j20a ?

the other thing is which is better for future turbo upgrade and what are the main faults of either engine?

you want the 2s from a celica notchback, they have the 2s -> w55, the borgwarner box in coronas was a lump of crap, wouldn't be worth putting behind anything. Stupid legislation is the only reason it was there.
