You will have a descent range of fairly compact V4 or V6 based OB powerheads with 115-250HP using carbs. Cost shouldn't be too mental. Ultimate would be a nice directed injected optimax mercury or etec evinrude

Nobody can accuse you of not thinking big Darren. I remember looking at outboards years ago and they were all upside down and back to front. Allen knows a guy who is an outboard mechanic and races circuit cars who has used a power head in a race car and he reckons it's easy, doesn't look it to me though. There was a Suzuki Fronte in the '60s that had a 750cc triple, don't know if it's similar to ours though. Most bike and ski engines just aren't designed to shift a heavy LJ50 nor turn big tyres. What about a big ass Suzuki water cooled Vtwin with gearbox attached and feeding a 3 speed holden or ford box, manual or auto? Even though it has the wrong number of strokes it'll have the right brand on it.

Pretty sure Mercury didn't own a tap back then because everything, even the heads are held on using nuts and bolts. I wouldn't have a Merc if I had the option.... IIRC 3 cyl Suzuki outboards went up to 90hp, I wana get one just because it'd be like having a "big block" LJ50.

I like to dream. I find it easier to just live with the limitations of 540cc. Things still seem to break for me.

Yeah, that would be nice! I was thinking you might be able to press the rear most part of the crank into a Suzuki outboard crank, thus getting around the flywheel issue. You could get Ball to make you a stroker crank.

I just try to be satisfied mine's running properly (and forwards, not backwards, like last time I left the points too long)

There are plenty of suzuki 4 stroke motors I can use already. Its a long term plan and im sure something will come up between now and then

not that you would find one local but does the Jet ski engine differ from a snow mobile engine? Those things would weigh the same or more then an LJ

A snow mobile engine would be easier but obviously harder to find in Aus.

If you wanted you could look into a motorbike engine not quite a jet ski tho as you seem to want. I think the main problem would be changing chain drive to shaft drive and gearing. Suzuki made the RGV 500 2 stroke, or a Honda NSR 500. There are vids on YouTube of them making 200 + HP reliably. Just my 2c

"IF" you could find 1 for sale it wouldn't be cheap.

Mate sold his spare RG500 motor minus pipes/carbs/ignition requiring rebuilding for $4000. Would have loved to see the mods they required + $$$ to get up to 200HP. Fresh RGV500 I rode was only punching out around 100ish at the wheels. It was also a very peaky engine in the bike so I doubt it would be much good in a 4x4 of sorts. Needs cubes and torque! The output HP of outboards is very very low in comparison to their capacity but they do have a pretty broad torque curve making them more suitable I believe. For example the mercury 3Liter block puts out a whopping 250HP max from factory. That's only 83HP/L from something that fires every stroke. An injected G16B is 60HP/L where as the RG500 is 188HP/L.

That's why I thought a big cc v twin bike, gearbox and all. You'd still need a car gearbox for reverse. Still not exactly practical but torquey and lots of gears. Only thing that makes real sense is a car motor, just like everyone else.

At a stonking 78hp per litre, LJ20 engines are almost a performance engine!

Coming into northern hemisphere summer so critters like snowmobiles aren't getting used... This pic is an old (1994) Polaris but you get the idea. Freight could be quite reasonable if sent by sea. ARCTIC CAT skis' all have Suzuki powerplants.
