Went to pick the sister in law up last night coming up a hill suddenly heard a loud clunk noise which threw us forward in our seats a little, pulled over couldn't see anything caught up so tried driving a little further and it was continuesly clunking, left it at a mates house over night and just dropped the rear drive shaft and drove it home with no noise,

Just dropped the oil in the rear diff to see what the plug looked like and there is one large bit of metal on it





Have I just lost a tooth in the diff or could it be the drive shaft bearing have collapsed?

Worst weekend for it to happen was looking forward to coffs

Yeah stuck my finger in there and there is a big chunk of metal up there,

Next question, cheaper to buy whole new axle and bolt it on my self or send it to a shop and get them to fix the problem, if I buy a new axle at least ill have spares I guess

Just get a new diff centre.

Hard to replace? If I pull something apart I can usually put it back together, worked on drill rigs for a year but have always had someone to go to if I wasn't sure

Just have to pull the axles out and drop the centre. Then chuck a new one in.

If you get under the car with the wheels off you can pretty much just keep undoing stuff till they come out. Not too hard.

Have most undone now, just need to get a bigger socket for that nut under the drive shaft, any idea how big it is, biggest I have is a 25mm and looks like a 28mm but don't want to buy the wrong size

don't need to remove that one.... remove the bolts from around the diff centre, remove axles & out it comes

Any suggestions on stopping all the brake fluid comin out lol, I have braided brake lines no flex hoses... Anyone know the size of the ends and maby I can find some caps to go over, or..... Probably good of time as any to flush the brake lines out

So when I'm pulling it out do I need to use the slide hammer to get it out? I'm building an attachment at the moment to go around the studs so I can use my slide hammer or does anyone else have a better idea

Slide hammer is best.
Some put the drum on backwards and hit the drum with a hammer or something?
I've used chain and a pole as a slide hammer.
Sometimes ive even just gave it a good hit with a hammer under tension.
I've seen people leave the wheel/tyre on, unbolt the backing plate and kick the tyre.

Ill just wait till my drill battery is charged and continue making my little bracket thing then and hope for the best, I've got it past the bolts just every time I give it a good pull I'm afraid I'm going to pull the car off the jack stands

Also is it true a wt sierra is the same diff center? There are a few sitting at the wreckers that I could see so would be easier and cheaper to get a hold of.

If i could have it off the road for a month I would be putting my bundera diffs on it I think, need the jimny at the moment but, maby when she runs out of rego ill buy a little $500 cherade or something to drive while I figure it all out

Yes. But the ratio is unique to Jimny. So you would still need to acquire a Jimny centre to get the ratio you need.

Good luck mate when I bought my last zook I had the bad luck of doing a diff centre, Iv pulled a fair few and once u do it once its secound nature.
I'm going to make a slide hamer tool for next time as well like u are know it can be a pain stoping the Tyre to pop the axel specially while its jacked up

from what i've seen it does appear jimny centres are weaker than sierra WT ones... but it would be marginal at best, and would totally depend on driving style. Monley for instance lunched his rear diff almost immediately after going to 31" tyres... but he drove it like a spanner =) lol

Now onto my little leaver/slide hammer doohickey



All the leaver thingy is is a star picket with holes drilled to the size of 2 opposite studs screwed on then attached the claws of the slide hammer around that and done, about 10 hits latter and a bleeding finger nail both out

Just got back from the wreckers and the best price I have found so far is $350... Good, bad, in the middle? Anyone know somewhere cheaper?

Wow just rang the Nerang Suzuki wreckers, he wanted $595 and my diff centre..... Might snap that $350 one up quick at this rate, the bloke said the rear diffs a rare....

I put a Maruti 4.1 rear in my Jimny years ago with no problems at all.
