I have an ARB Air compressor that came with the purchase of my 99 Jimny but its mounted in the engine bay (not a good idea with all the heat and dust). I am going to re-locate it is anyone running one or any suggestions where to put it? I know most people run them under the seat but I wanted to know if I sink the car will water kill it? should I look to mount it higher?

In addition to the air compressor I am also looking to get an 18L air tank so It can store a ready supply of air and I will also attach the hose fitting to this tank for pumping the tyres and running air tools. Anyone running this already? Any suggestion where I can put this under the body where it wont foul any suspension components and is not in great danger of damage from rocks? I can fabricate a heavy bit of armour for it if needed. I did not particularly want to mount inside if I can get away with it.

I need to mount both so that I can keep the rear seats in (take the kids for a play in the mud now and again) and also so that I can fold the seats up and put in a storage system etc.

Also is anyone running a water tank anywhere? and if so where.

My ARB compressor is under my passengers seat 13months of use and it doesn't stink.

If I did it again I would mount it in the same spot.

I just bolted mine to the wheel arch, not neat but it does the job, running hi temp hose from the compressor to the "manifold" which has a pressure on/off switch and a safety release valve, and just a plastic hose going to the tank. I've bene meaning to change the plastic hose to a proper screw on hose but I haven't got around to it yet. There's also a quick release on the end of the tank.

mine is mounted to my draws. you could try fit in where the jack is in the rear.

Is this a sierra? I dont think I can mount mine there - that is where I would like to mount it but I need to be able to keep the rear seats in and have them able to fold down and I dont think the tank will fit there.

I think this is where it will have to go - I might see if I can remove a bit of floor to get it to sit a bit lower and build a box over the top of it to protect it

Yeah mate, in a 97 coily. Not sure if the rear of the Jim is the same but I just posted anyway to give you some ideas.

we ran our under the bonnet on the hilux where the abs would be in an sr5 infront of the brake booster and we've sunk a few times ants its been up the cape and across the simpson and had no dramas at all, why not mount the tank in the engine bay it there room or in the bull bar? we have a 20L tank in each of the front corners of the bull bar, great use of space and seeing as its only air its not going to drag the car down to mush at th front

What I have seen people do is pressurize a tube bar with air, portable air tank and makes use of the space in the bar. Though not sure how safe it would be/or legalities with having accidents etc.

do you really need an air tank, surely a BOSS compressor or the new arb twin compressor would be enough for the average person... you don't really need air tools, it's a jimny after all not a mack truck.

if you needed a tank, i'd be finding use of those small wasted spaces & putting a few smaller tanks in as per phat sierra suggested.

I had an air tank in Snow White and I certainly wouldn't bother with a tank again.
Even a 40 litre tank won't hold enough volume of air @120psi to run a rattle gun for more than 2 seconds.

Have you ever tried to hold a compressor after its been running for a few minutes? They get bloody hot.... I'd say hotter than engine bay temps get to.

I think its silly personally. But, you wouldnt have it pressure in it while you didnt need to, such as driving on the road..

Ummm, yeah, right... Could do 6 wheel nuts before the compressor would kick in on my 30L tank set up.

Tanks are good for fast inflation, air horns, the occasional rattle gun to remove tyres, but portable 18v tools are the go really.

The idea behind it is to allow quicker inflation times for tyres etc. In terms of air tools I did not just mean rattle gun - air chisels, grinders etc are all hand and small enough to get into hard to reach spots if needed rather then something like a bulky battery grinder. Im sure I read somewhere about a fitting to connect a hose from a water tank to it to turn it into a pressurised sprayer (like a piss weak little gurnie) handy for washing down the fishing gear and kayak after being in salt rather then it being all dried on by the time I get home. But it was mainly for the quicker tyre inflation.

I was reading on one from AOB that it will take a 30 or 31 inch from 15psi to 34psi in 45 seconds - I think that was with a 9L tank.

I think that an onboard air set up might be pushing pop uphill.

Snap-on elec rattle gun would be the weapon in the bush I would take.

Belt driven 150Lpm and decent rattle gun belongs in the shed

Bit of an interesting read on a couple of tests done re some different sized tanks. Thinking I might run a 9L tank to keep the space used up to a minimum.

I got a 6kg fire extinguisher in the vit as a air tank
Runs off a cheap ebay twin pistion pump
Its good for reseating beads

I have a 9L tank tucked under the floor in front of the fuel tank.

My exhaust and tank aren't stock, but I expect most sierra's should have some room under there.

I'm not running air tools, but its handy for re-seating tyres.
