Hi Guys,
I have been talking to an engineer about my project and he has given me some good info on what can and cannot be done - most of the stuff I should have no problem but the basics come down to:
1. You cannot engineer something with over 4 inches of lift with the new laws. This can be a combination of body lift and suspension lift. (Although I am sure that there are some engineers that would do it just that things get more costly). 2. The new laws state you cannot increase tyre diameter by more then 2 inches from the factory tyres - so for a jimny this means that 28 inch or 225's are the biggest tyre he could engineer. a 2 inch increase in the tyre height will also ad to a 1 inch increase in vehicle height from factory.
I have been told that a suzuki on 31's has the same diff clearance as a patrol on 35's and so I was hoping to run and have engineered 30's on my Jimny.
Do any of you guys have tyres that are bigger then 225's engineered and if so could you pm me or post the details of your engineer so I can talk to them?
I am only looking at a 2 inch suspension lift. and I have ordered the 50mm body lift. and with the additional bar work and other things it will probably only result in 3-3.5 inch of total lift over stock.
Did not want this thread to turn into a debate about what size tyres and lift to run as there are plenty of threads like that already, just want to know what everyone has been able to engineer.
Thanks

I've engineered 2" suspension, 2" body lift, and 31s on one of my sierras. That was through Athol Mullen, who won't do 31s anymore.

I didn't ask about getting more diff clearance, I just asked what tyres everyone has engineered. Also I was just putting up something I got told. Basically just trying to find out if i can get 30's engineered or 30.9's or what ever they work out to be.

Athol is who I was talking to I just found this bit of info
Here is what he has said it was based on patrol I think:
"The last position from the RTA on tyre diameters that I have been notified of was that up to 15mm increase from the original tyres is no problem at all, up to 50mm requires speedo calibration and extra checking of clearances, and over 50mm (2") requires an abridged brake test (lowest price I can find $2500) The rims cannot be wider then 8" unless they are an OEM option.

Your best to ask the engineer you wanna work with. I know there is a pajero on 42s engineered. But I was told I couldn't engineer 33s on a zook.
It's all up to the engineer.
I would suggest using a different engineer.

i engineered 31s on my sierra - but that was before WA adopted NCOP... now my engineer wont even both with a lift over 2" because its too hard.

Engineering is extremely subjective.
THe only way to get a real answer is to ring up the guy who is going to be signing it off.
"i have heard" and "my mate told me" and "i once saw a car that"....all these are useless as all that matters is how the engineer you speak with interprets the rules.
Even if someone else has had theirs engineered, the rules change, so what was allowed back then, may not be allowed now.
Especailly since this is an Australian forum, and you live in NSW, the rules change if you drive ~1hr up the coast into QLD.

I thought the new scheme was a national one to simplify everything so that the states would be the same? I will look into it in a bit further detail. But at I believe I can get the 30's engineered just $2500 to do the brake test is a bit of a blow - could be doing lots of mods for that amount.

Why not just engineer everything except the tyres? So if you ever get defected you can whack the smaller tyres on and go clear it. Altho, I doubt that 30s will get you defected....

But all states have interpreted this scheme differently. and thus we are no closer to a national scheme than we were before the NCOP was introduced.

well that is my other option, however I was going to try to engineer the whole lot because: a) most likely the way things are heading you won't be able to have anything but a stock car. b) $2500 compared to an accident when they decide not to insure you because part of your car was not engineered could be a hell of a lot more costly. My other option is to get something like http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 592wt_1163 as it will not cost the $2500 and is easier to engineer and no doubt will get me 90% of the places I am likely to try get to

The rules have not changed. They are "guide only"

Try Kreative Engineering in Windsor. The Engineer there doesn't seem to have any 'axe-to-grind' with the new rules and regs, and he's totally straight up with them in my opinion, no dodgyness whatsoever. He'll give you good advice and whatever he does will comply with the law. He specialises in Dif's 4x4s etc, so I thoroughly recommend. Brake test there and speedo test are definately required, but He had no problem with the brake test. He has the equipment to do it, and it won't cost $2500. I had a load of mods engineered for $800. You need to be sensible and involve the engineer BEFORE the mods, or else the dollars will add up. You know it'll need a speedo calibration, so you need to sort it before you get it tested or else you are just throwing money away. Same with the wheels, you know they got to clear the body under all suspension reticulation so make sure it does before you take it to get it engineered. Give em a call and ask about the wheels. If you want a serious answer, then make an appointment to visit the engineer and bring the vehicle and detailed lists of the mods. He'll take you more seriously. Chances are Athol and the like get so many calls a day from people they will often only hand out the most conservative advice over the phone as would we all. If you get serious with the mods and start talking cash and certificates etc, then you'll get a serious assessment from these guys.

Sweet thanks I will look them up, as I told Athol I had waited until I had my project funds sorted and a list of mods with all the info I could find before contacting him to show I was not wasting his time or mine. I will give them a call and book in an appointment, the tyres were the only part I was uncertain about exactly what could be engineered - thanks for the contact

I had the brake test with the rest of my mods. FYI I only had 215's so there was no question mark over my tyre size. But I think realistically you can install bigger tyres, it's all subject to putting the right control measures in place, brakes are adequate, speedo accurate, clearance, mud flaps, etc... If you do it right it'll be engineered I'm sure. It's possible there might be a 50mm cap in place on tyre size increase, but this is the first I've heard on that issue so get the real intel from Kreative. Whatever you find I wouldn't go quoting what a specific engineer said "this about that" etc... or they'll stop handing out advice if everything they say gets quoted. All the best with your project!!!

The quote that I put up from the engineer is from a post in his facebook page, he puts up questions that he gets via emails and does an answer on it so that everyone can read them - I guess so he does not need to keep answering the same questions all the time. But your suggestion is noted for the future.

Would also like to ad as well that Athol was very quick to reply to questions I emailed him and was very open and forthcoming in providing me with answers and information, so I will still get a few different opinions on things but don't want any posts to be taken that he was not helpful or provided the wrong information - As everyone says it is up to each individual engineer how they interpret the rules and what they are or are not willing to engineer.

His well know for passing anything Like if you ever want anything passed his your guy He got his licence taken off him after the pajero plus a few 2door imports. But has it back.

i reckon that paj was built a bit earlier than 2010 but still in that time when almost anything & everything in NSW was passable... times have changed.

On 29" tyres (worn 31s) my friends Patrol has 170mm of clearance under the back diff. With 25" tyres I had 210mm in the LJ (same size pumpkin as Jimny front). Both measured diameter at road pressure. 29-25 = 4. 4/2 = 2. 2"=50mm. 170 - 50 = 120. 210 - 120 = 90mm In English, for the same sized tyre that's a 90mm difference in clearance. It was a full float rear diff in the back of a GU ute. It's worth noting that he actually had 150mm of clearance under the spring packs, the diff wasn't the lowest point. I haven't measured but the full float pumpkin seems quite a bit bigger. He was certainly diffing out on it long before his front diff.

So do they go out and measure the actual tire diameter under it's recommend pressure and load on the vehicle or just read what ever is on the sidewall which as may know, varies quite a bit...

Locally, it has been sidewall size.
