Hey all
Just wondering about a heavy duty clutch. I think i might be not far off getting a new one in my 97 coily and I've heard of people putting a heavy duty clutch in.
Just wondering has anyone else done this and was it any good? What brand did you use and what's the difference?

I put one in a few years ago, broke 2 clutch cables so I took it out and fitted a stock clutch.

Is it possible to also upgrade the clutch cable?

I put an excedy HD in around 3 years (~40k) ago still on the original clutch cable that already ~200k on it to start with. Cable is starting to fall apart now tho. Still a descent lifetime out of the cable IMO

I went through this dilemma a few years back with my old jimny, and decided against the heavy duty clutch due to the cable issue. Imo a engine with 60 odd kilowatts doesn't need a HD clutch. I used a standard exedy and never had a drama

Don't confuse heavy duty with better quality.
It is more than just a heavy pressure plate that makes a clutch good.
Friction plate material is just as important in stopping slip.
A heavy clutch pedal (assuming cable clutch) is hard on your leg in traffic, too.

Do you research, buy the best you can.

Well I got no idea what excedy do to their HD clutches but the pedal effort is identical if not less than stock. Manipulating the clutch the way I drive would wreck your leg if the effort was high..

Excedy have a good reputation, probably use good parts.

I've got the Exedy HD clutch (part # SZK-6474HD) in both of my GTi sirra's and it's awsome....a few people that have driven the cars can vouch that they didn't even know they were HD

As for snapping clutch cables .....it can happen anytime especially if the cable is 25yrs plus......and another thing to ask....was the clutch cable adjusted correctly in the first place?! You need to have 2-3mm play in the pedal before it even starts to grab on the top (you should be able to press it with just a finger to move it)....then adjust like oozuk explained

If you're getting the ON/OFF feeling then you need to loosen the clutch and have more free play
The myth about snapping cables is just that!!!

When i first installed the clutch on one of the cars it felt like the worst clutch in the world....was heavy on the foot...had that on/off feel and sprung back like a loaded shot gun.
I had to move the clutch lever bracket on the gearbox 'forward' towards the engine to get more cable at the end poking through the lever.
You are meant to leave at least 25-30mm of cable sticking out the end and have at least a 20-30mm free play in the pedal itself before it starts catching (feeling heavy).
Once all this was done it felt soooooo smooth and the clutch pedal is exactly the same (if not better) than the standard

It all comes down to how you setup and adjust the clutch

Anyway....part numbers if you need them
SZK-6293 (this is for a 18 spline) very un-common
SZK-6474 (OME replacement for the 20 spline)
SZK-6474HD (HD version for 20 spline)

Each to their own but IMO i would be getting the HD clutch
