Wont 60 mm lift be the perfect one for me?

The perfect balance between safety and offroad performance?

Or is the difference between 60 mm and 75 mm too small?

Just saw tough tog had a 60 mm lift ?

What is your guys opinion,

what exactly are you draging the belly of the car over? got a photo for examples sake?
is it the belly or just the sills geting smashed?
have you got guards/ armour? they might be a better investment if your scraping so frequently.

Are you reading what we are writing mcguyver? There is no such thing as the "right" answer. The lower you can run your car the better. Adding lift is no gaurantee of increased capability. I can't think of an obstacle that 20mm of more spring lift would make my car able to drive it can't now, but I can think of plenty of times I'd like 20mm less overall height.

So, what are you unhappy with about your car's performance right now?

Steve,

I got a steedplate under my transfer case and i have protection cups where te radius arms attaches to the chassis,

At the monent with the bigger tires the217 75 r15 from the 205 75 r15, the articulation are really limited, aswell as the front tire scrapes when the front coils get compressed, this can be foxed by lowering the bump stop,

I know suspention always have to do with a sacrifice, i think 60mm migh be the right answer for me, but i agree that i depends on the user's needs,

I would just like some wheen travel without making my car top heavy and making it unsafe, obviously with any suspention ipgrade your driving stule should be a little changed, at the moment i drive permenently with my sway bar disconnected, and may explain why the scraping in the front wheeel arches occur,

So that is my thoughts so far,

Im really keen for 60mm lift,i know it not certain that the car will be more dapable but atleast then i wil get some wheel travel back.

Thank you guys :) hope i dont sound to dumb,

Suspension lift adds little wheel travel, if any, and often reduces articulation due to the increased spring rate. This is why people sometimes think suspension lift allows the fitment of larger tyres.

Tell me steve,
what is the main reason that so many guys on here are doing a 3 inch lift?

Just to suit the 235 wheel size?
Coz i doubt if it is ground clearance cos the diff doesnt get lifted, and not articulation as you just stated?

Thank you :)

I did 3 inch because I have a bar and winch, and I always have a fairly loaded up car, so that combined with sag over time, mine is probably only 2 inch at end of the day.

50mm body lift should keep your tires off your guards, with a minimal increase in rollover angle. cheaper then suspension
Bigjimny guard chop will remove the problem guards and will cost you nothing but a boxcutter.

i have 60KG of winch and bullbar, and 45kg attached to the rear bar, so i have 40mm springs and 15mm coilspacers. bodylift, suspension and wheels keep the water out of my car a lot more than previously.

at the end of the day, get what you want.

when time comes, I more likely would get the 3" jimny bits, as not only for price, components, but because I like the final stance (yes, I do want my 4wd to look "pretty"), plus I want to minimize the wheel arch chopping...... and yes, I could achieve the sma eby chopping all the guards and staying with the stock suspension, but not really keen on doing that

who knows, I might get convinced latter on to get a good 50mm setup.

but yeah, as others say, a suspension lift doesnt means more flex or travel. as the suspension link setup woudl remain the same, just with longer coils

have a look at this from Zanfi:

3" lift kit
Image

and what they advertise as 5" or 4"
Image

the amount of flex is the same, if not better on the 3" as the extended bumpstops on the bigger one limit wheel travel for bigger tyres

also look at this
Image

you would think "wooow look at that flex, look how much the back wheel drops... but again, this car has a bodylift... so try to see the pic with the body of the car 2" lower.... and presto, same flex again

unless u modify the suspension link setup as 31zook did by putting a 3-link on the front, ur flex and travel would remain roughly the same no matter the lift

I can't speak for those that have a 3" lift, but I'm pretty sure that some people have done it because they like the look of the car 3" taller. Some people also try to avoid any contact between the underside of the car and the terrain.

Personally, I don't think either of these reasons are good enough to compromise the function of the car, but everyone makes different choices.

If the 3 lift is being used for heavy cars to maintain acceptable ride and handling at a lower height due to the increased weight then that's totally fair.

I think the assumption that because a 3" lift is available from a supplier it must be a good product or a good idea is a bit wonky.

Quote:

I'll reiterate - a properly designed suspension lift WILL NOT fit a larger tyre size. The axle can still move up as far towards the body as standard, so tyre contact will still occur when you are flexing offroad.

I am suspicious that some/all 3" lifts for Jimny's use stiff springs that no longer allow the axle to compress as far towards the body. This is poor spring design and is the same problem that leaf sprung suzuki sierras have with a 3" lift. The suspension design is too compromised when lifted 3", whuch is why a 40mm or 2" lift result in better performance.

Remember, bumpstop spacing, body lift or guard chopping are the only way to fit a larger tyre. There is no other way.

Yeah i think so mate, wasnt a choice when I bought mine.

They are a great kit and I honestly dont know anyone who has a bad thing to say about them. You are going to get comments from both sides of the fence with whatever you choose. I dont think 3" suffer like Steve said (im happy with my up-travel plenty!) but thats just my opinion and he has his, which is fine. This is the interwebs afterall. :peaceout:

i think a 3'' lift to run 215's, is 3'' of lift to much.

A stock jimny has 190mm (7.6")ground clearance and a 90" wheel base from stock.

Sierra 245mm (9.8") ground clearance and 79" from factory.

I lifted my jimny 80mm so that it didn't get hung up on every bump. I like low don't get me wrong it's just an impractical chassis height.

 brake the string on the tampon this morning? pompoms

that was yesterday :p

just beacuse he has 3 inch doesnt mean he has to run 29's or 30's its his car let him do it how he wants.

I think this attitude/response is unhelpful. How can I/we/the internet stop someone doing anything? It's not possible. However, if someone asks for an opinion or advice on a modification/idea whatever that is pointless, inadvisable, unsafe, or is unlikely to achieve their desired goal, I assume the "correct" response is to say "yep that's awesome go right ahead it's your car, build it however you want."

I reckon the whole point of forums like this is to assist people in making better decisions about their vehicles for themselves. Personally, I don't give a shit what someone does to their car, so long as they know why they did it. The reasoning of why you might want to do something can only get stronger by discussing it openly on a forum.

So, I think it's completely fair to ask why someone would set their car up with a certain amount of lift. If they don't have a good reason, then maybe there isn't a good reason that amount of lift is suitable for someone else.

I think the great unspoken reason people do lots of things to their cars is because they think it looks good. That's a valid reason for sure, but if that's the real reason someone has done something then they must be prepared that others won't see that as a good enough, especially if it reduces the cars performance.

I'm not directing this at anyone specific at all. I just find the "let them do whatever they want" argument really redundant. Of course they are going to do whatever they want.

Actually, I was going to ask where you measured those ground clearance numbers.

I just ran a tape over my stock sierra ute and I get about 210mm to the bottom of the front spring hanger on the chassis. If anything, that's a bit too tall as the car is on stands but basically at ride height for a stock tyre.

Coincidentally on that car I get about 210 to the bottom of the rear diff, but that's on 1.0 diffs and stock WT tyres.

The end result is that I reckon that there;s very little difference in ground clearance stock vs stock for a jimmy or sierra.

I do agree that the longer wheelbase and the location of the radius arm mounts will increase ramp over dramas compared to a SWB sierra, but a LWB sierra has more wheelbase than a Jimny (and miles more rear overhang) and the same GC as a SWB sierra.

I think the tight wheelarches, reluctance to guard chop a more expensive vehicle, and more vulnerable lower bodywork (compared to a sierra) increase the demand for tall lifts. conversely though, the higher COG of the Jimny and the tendency of radius arm suspensions to unload make them a bad candidate for those lift heights.

I checked a couple of suzuki spec websites and got the numbers from there.

And no-one measure the belly from the spring hangers. I mean fair enough if the Tcase hangs down in the middle of the belly you can measure off that. But the spring hangers normally end up covered by tyres anyway.

Ramp over on a Jimny is 31° does anyone know what a stock Sierra is?

On the LJ I got 230mm to the bottom of the front spring hanger with leaves that were sagged so bad I more clearance under the spring plate (excluding the shock absorber eye, 240mm. 215mm under the shock.) on tyres that measure 26" on the front and 25" on the back.

Out of curiosity, how much clearance do you have under the front shackle Steve? I measured to the bottom of the main leaf and got 295mm both sides.

I measured a heap of things on the LJ and posted it in my thread, it'd be interesting to see the differences between an LJ, Sierra and Jimny if anyone else has a stock vehicle they would like to measure?

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=37003&p=731323

Jimnys certainly look lower but the low sills and tiny wheel arches would trick the eye a little. :)

You would need about a 37" tyre to. "cover" the spring hangers

grab a ruler and see how much actually it is 1"

its funny when you see all this rage between 2" or 3" lift from a different point of view. =P

(....and I know it affects performance, balance, etc etc... just making a funny coment before you all start raging at me.. )
